British Billionaire Richard Branson Condemns Indonesia for Executing Nigerians, Others

British billionaire Richard Branson has taken to his blog to denounce the execution of the Bali Nine by firing squad.

According to him, the action is “needless” and “brutal”. He also warned the Indonesian government that the decision will severely “hamper the country’s chances to secure clemency for Indonesians facing the death penalty abroad”.

“Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso was granted a last-minute reprieve. But Rodrigo Gularte, Martin Anderson (aka Belo), Raheem Agbaje Salami, Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, Okwudili Oyatanze, Zainal Abidin bin Mgs Mahmud Badarudin, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran lost their lives brutally and needlessly.

“Brutally, because the death penalty is always cruel, barbaric and inhumane. It has no place in a civilised society.

“Needlessly, because these executions will not do anything to deter drug trafficking in Indonesia or reduce supply and demand. There is plenty of evidence that prohibition and strict law enforcement have little to no effect on the drug trade. If Indonesia wants to tackle its drug problems effectively, it needs to return to evidence-based policies that place public health over criminal law enforcement.”

He went on to discuss the tales of prisoners’ rehabilitation, particularly of Andrew and Myuran, who he heralded as “shining examples of people working through their mistakes and becoming productive members of society”.

Branson concluded that the death of the eight prisoners in Bali will have a “significant negative impact on Indonesia’s standing in the world”.

“I hope some good will come out of these tragic events, as more and more people realise inhumane death penalty laws must end globally, now,” he said. “As people unite behind the #IStandForMercy hashtag, public disgust for the death penalty grows and hope increases that an end to the death penalty is in sight.”

“To paraphrase Oscar Wilde: ‘The only difference between saints and sinners is that every saint has a past while every sinner (should have) a future.’

“Everyone deserves a second chance. Let’s do away with the death penalty once and for all.”

Update on Military Operation in Sambisa Forest by Chris Olukolade

Update on Military Operation in Sambisa Forest by Chris Olukolade

-Rescued Women Undergoing Thorough Profiling

-True Identities of some Freed Victims Yet to be ascertained

-Terrorist Field Commanders Killed -Notorious Training Camps Destroyed

-Nigerians being held captives are being freed by Gallant Troops

-hope for the recovery of more hostage of the terrorists

A Press Briefing by Director Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade at Defence Headquarters, Abuja on April 30, 2015

Gentlemen of the press, As you already know, troops have commenced operations deep into the Sambisa forest after sustained aerial bombardments by the Nigerian Air Force. The main objective as you know is to decimate and clear the terrorists from the forest which is their last bastion.

Several field commanders and foot soldiers of the terrorist group have lost their lives, some armoured personnel carriers, Bufallo vehicles mounted with Anti-Aircraft guns, a truck and several Hilux vehicles were destroyed by troops. Also recovered from the fleeing terrorists are a number of Anti-Aircraft guns, General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) and several AK 47 rifles.

Unfortunately though, we lost one soldier in the course of the operation while 10 others have so far been wounded.

The true identity of some of the rescued women and girls are yet to be ascertained. At the moment, what is upper most and of priority is their movement to a conducive place where they are now undergoing thorough profiling to verify their true identity, where they come from, how they found themselves in the forest, etc. Additional number of persons are still being recovered from the forest.

Until such comprehensive profiling is done, nobody can confirm whether they are among the Chibok girls or not. Whoever they may be, the important thing is that Nigerians held captive under very severe and inhuman condition have been freed by our gallant troops. The joy and sense of hope being expressed by many Nigerians on hearing about the rescue operation is therefore understandable.

We would like to reassure them that the momentum of this operation will be sustained until that sambisa forest is comprehensively cleaned out and all Nigerians held captive within the bowels of the forest are rescued. There is great hope for the recovery of more hostage of the terrorists. Already, the dislodged and disorganized terrorists are in flight on different directions and running helter-skelter in the expansive forest.

There is no longer any respite or sanctuary for them; they will be pursued and tracked down not minding the daunting challenges in the mission including hundreds of land mines and difficult terrain of the Sambisa forest. It should be noted however that the essence of this operation is not to kill everybody in sight. We encourage any of the combatants who is desirous to surrender to come out, as the forest will no more be tenable as a haven for their activities.

In the same vein, innocent civilians among those in flight are also encouraged to report themselves to the troops. We will continue to treat civilians in the most professional and humane way.

We thank all Nigerians for their continued prayers and support and assure them that Never Again shall forces of darkness reign supreme in our country.

Thank you.

CHRIS OLUKOLADE Major General Director Defence Information

S’Africans attacks on foreigners planned – S’African Mayor

Police reinforcements have been rushed to Thabazimbi in Limpopo after shops owned by foreign nationals were looted and vandalised.

About 50 foreign nationals, including women and children, have been accommodated at a local sports centre. Police have arrested 15 suspects, with Thabazimbi mayor, Patricia Mosito, having condemned the incident.

Mosito says one way or another, “this thing was organised because people cannot just wake up and start engaging in this criminal acts.” The mayor has added that “it is criminal to attack foreign nationals. It is not something that we can condone, it’s something criminal.”

Meanwhile, Ethiopian and Somali nationals whose shops were looted at Reogorokgile township in Thabazimbi on Freedom Day say they would like to be reintegrated back into the community.

About 50 of them were rescued from an angry mob and are temporary accommodated at the Thaba Park Sports Centre in the Thabazimbi Central Business District. Five shops were looted.

On Wednesday, Chief Executive Officer of the South African Council for Educators and President of the African Forum of Teacher Regulatory Authorities, Rej Brijraj, condemned the recent spate of xenophobic violence in the country.

Brijraj was briefing the media in Pretoria and said he has confidence in the country’s ability to abolish attacks on foreign nationals.

Audit Report Says NNPC Actually Overpaid Nigeria by $750m

The PwC audit report on the finances of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, says the state company remitted an excess $750m into the federation account during the period being audited, Reuters reports.

President Goodluck Jonathan had released the audit days after Gen. Muhammadu Buhari had pledged to issue the report and crack down on corruption in the energy company once in office.

Details in the PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) audit said NNPC actually overpaid by $0.74-billion in the period between January 2012 to July 2013, after remitting $50.81-billion to federation accounts of the $69.34-billion it had received.

The balance of $18.53-billion was accounted for through various operational costs, unremitted revenues by a subsidiary and gasoline and kerosene subsidies, it said.

The probe of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) books was instituted last year after former central bank governor Lamido Sanusi said the firm had withheld $20-billion in oil revenue from government coffers, jeopardising the country’s finances

APC suspends zoning

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended the zoning of offices, especially in the National Assembly, reports New Telegraph.

The suspension is to defuse tension following the jostling for positions by lawmakers from both chambers.

All deliberations on the zoning formula have been suspended till after May 29 when the new government would have been inaugurated.

The decision to suspend all deliberations until after May 29 was taken after the President- elect, Muhammadu Buhari intervened.

Buhari was said to be disturbed by the dangerous media slant the issue has taken.

AIT Chairman to Buhari: You Are Powerless Here, Old Dictator

Daar Communications chairman, Raymond Dokpesi has stated that General Muhammadu Buhari lacks the power (constitutionally) to stop the TV station from covering his activities.

Daily Indepedent reports this story, saying that Buhari's decision to bar the radio station on Monday was like Nigeria going back to the Decree 4 era, which was enacted by Buhari's junta back in the day as a muzzle on the press of his time.

Dokpesi said: “I am sure that the President-elect needs to be reminded of Decree 4, and he should be clearly reminded that Section 32 of the constitution makes it mandatory for the media to hold public officials accountable to the people.

“The president-elect said that he does not want to be covered by AIT, but AIT has a responsibility to the Nigerian public to report the things that are happening.

“There are three national networks available for national coverage in Nigeria, the NTA, AIT and Silverbirds. You cannot stop a foremost private station from reporting in Nigeria, it brings us back to Decree 4 era.”

He said that AIT is a private entity and is therefore free to air what it feels like:

“If they had produced their own documentary to say this is what we want and AIT did not publish it, then that is another matter.

“What is obviously very clear is the fact that AIT believes that the historical information about the President-elect that were ran, were factually correct.

“Nothing was done to defame him or impinge on his character or integrity."

I Was Not Walked Out - Mu’azu

The National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Adamu Mu’azu, has denied reports that he was walked out of a meeting by governors of the party at Akwa Ibom governors lodge in Asokoro.

Reports circulating in the media speculated that Muazu was evicted from a governors forum meeting by angry governors who accused him of betraying the party at the just concluded presidential elections.
Reacting to these reports, the party chairman on Wednesday, April 29 said nothing of such nature occurred.

However, the dismal outing of the PDP in the 2015 general elections has seen Mu’azu lose popularity among several PDP bigwigs.

The plot to unseat him has thickened as he has been blamed for the inability of the party to do well at the polls in the north in particular and the nation in general.

But the spokesman of the national chairman, Tony Amadi, told Leadership that Mu’azu was not bundled out of the meeting.

He said “If they said he was bundled out of the meeting where was his security details? If they attempt to bundle out the chairman there would have been a shoot out between the security details of Mu’azu and the governors and nobody wants that. Don’t forget you are talking about a former governor and a national chairman of a political party.

“What we are doing in the party now is how to restrategise and bounce back.”

He further lambasted those calling for Mu’azu to resign, noting that most of them failed to deliver their states at the polls.

Protesting workers lock out Anyim over N1.2b allowances

THERE was a protest yesterday at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF). The workers are demanding the payment of N1.2 billion allowances.

The staff who had earlier planned the protest for Tuesday postponed it till yesterday as SGF Anyim Pius Anyim was away from the office.

The angry staff blocked all the entrances around 2pm when Anyim arrived the office.

The staff said they had petitioned Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chair Ibrahim Lamorde over the matter.

The EFCC Chairman, it was said, visited the SGF after receiving the petition. This could, however, not be confirmed last night.

The angry civil servants gave Anyim a 24-hour ultimatum to pay the allowances.

When contacted on telephone last night, the Special Adviser on Media to the SGF, Sam Nwabasi, told The Nation that the office was surprised with the figure being thrown up as no money has been mentioned in the earlier discussions between the unions and the management.

According to him, the union had earlier demanded for 18 items, including erecting an ATM machine and a canteen in the office.

He said that management had looked into their demands and communicated back its responses to the union. They have been waiting for them to make their views known to management on the proposals.

But rather than come back to the management, he said that they took the action and made the spurious monetary allegations.

Buhari not aware of AIT barring order' - party says

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has instructed that all his aides must only operate within the space their official role stipulates.

As contained in a statement released in Abuja, on Wednesday, April 29, by Mallam Garba Shehu, the Director of Media and Publicity of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Buhari was not consulted or informed before the statement barring the African Independent Television (AIT) went out.

I would like everyone to henceforth stay within his or her defined area of responsibility,” Buhari was quoted as saying.

The statement said the President-elect only knew about the story of him barring AIT from covering his activities after it had generated public racket.

The time of change has come, and we must avoid making the same mistakes that the outgoing government made,” Buhari said.

According to Shehu, the retired Major General has however instructed all his staff to desist from all matters relating to the media. He said only his official media team should handle media-related issues.

In EnuguTwo men kill mother, father in separate incidents

Two unrelated sons have killed their parents in separate incidents in Enugu state.

The state Police Command is said to be investigating what could have led to the murders, which occurred in the space of two days - Sunday, April 26, and Monday, April 27, 2015 at different locations of the state.

It was reported that the first killer, identified as Chijioke Onyeke slashed his father’s head with a machete around 6.00 pm that day, following a yet-to-be known argument at Umuaina, Umuogboagu village, in Igboeze North Local Government Area of the state.

Pulse gathered that family members who were at the scene at the time rushed the man to St. Mary’s hospital, Ogurete, Enugu Ezike, but later died due to severe injury sustained from the cuts.

Chijioke has however been arrested, and his father’s corpse deposited in the morgue of the General Hospital, Ogurute, Enugu Ezike, for autopsy.

In the same vein, another son, Chidi Agbo, from Ette Center in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State beat his mother to death. The reason for his abominable act is also yet to be ascertained.

Buhari, AtikuTwo leaders hold 'private' meeting in Abuja

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, April 29 met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the Defence House in Abuja for a ‘private’ meeting.

It is believed that the two leaders met over issues surrounding the zoning of offices, but Atiku said the discussion was private.

“We just discussed private matters,” he said while addressing newsmen after the meeting.

On the zoning of offices, Atiku said,  “That is too early. This is something the leadership and the party is handling. I believe it will be resolved before the House is reconvened (in June).”

Atiku stressed that Nigerians should not expect the Buhari government to effect the changes the country needs overnight, noting it will be gradual.

“Really, changes will come. The President-elect has assured the people that, but it will not just come overnight; it has to be gradual. Definitely, there will be positive change in that matter but it will be gradual,” he said.

Shettima, Chibok community: hope rises for Chibok girls

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima said yesterday that the news of the rescued women is gratifying even if they are not the Chibok schoolgirls.

In a statement by his spokesman Mallam Isa Gusau, the governor said:  ”The lives, safety and well-being of all citizens of Borno are of equal importance to me. I celebrate news about the rescue with so much excitement in a manner I would celebrate when the military succeeds in freeing the Chibok schoolgirls.

“I was so full of excitement, gratitude to God almighty and commendation to our gallant armed forces for this great humanitarian feat. For me, the lives, safety and welfare of all citizens of Borno State are of equal importance. These rescued women are daughters, sisters and perhaps also mothers whose lives are important not just to their loved ones but also to me as Governor of Borno State whose mandate is to cater for the welfare of all those living in any part of Borno State regardless of who they are, their faith, gender, age, geopolitical origins and other background elements.

“They are important to us and words cannot explain how pleased we are. We are very particular about Chibok schoolgirls because of the peculiar manner in which they were kidnapped and how that kidnap has redefined the Boko Haram insurgency. The Chibok schoolgirls are very dear to my heart because they were kidnapped while they were in school. Their kidnap is very symbolic because their kidnappers are opposed to western education especially female education. The entire world especially myself, is desperate about the rescue of the Chibok schoolgirls in order not to allow the ideology held by the insurgents to thrive and to encourage education which is the foundation of any human or society that seeks to develop. However, this rescue is also very dear to me. I am as pleased as much as I would be when the Chibok schoolgirls are rescued by the special grace of God.

“I am very optimistic, prayerful and supportive of the military’s ongoing rescue and counter insurgency operations. We won’t give up on the Chibok schoolgirls like I said two weeks ago. No sane parent gives up on a missing child. I have daughters and I know the love of a parent to the girl child.

“For now, it is better to allow the military handle things, conduct their investigations and ascertain the identity of those rescued but irrespective of the identity of the girls, we are very happy they have been rescued whether they are citizens of Borno or any where else. I kindly urge the media to refer to the military for updates on the matter so that there are mixups at any point. I kindly call on all citizens of Borno and other fellow Nigerians to pray for our armed forces and volunteers to succeed so that good will triumph over Evil.”

The Director of Publicity for Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA), a pan organisation of Chibok people worldwide, Dr. Allen Manasseh, told our correspondent in Maiduguri on telephone that the rescue of the 293 women had cleared doubts about the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls.

Dr. Allen who expressed hope that the Chibok girls will also return someday said:

“What happened yesterday is cheering news for all of us. It has given us hope that the Chibok girls too will be rescued one day. The incident has also helped to clear the mind of some doubting Thomases that there was no abduction of the girls.

“At least it has shown that apart from these girls, there are several other women that were kept in captivity by the Boko Haram.

“The Chibok community is also happy with the families of the released victims and it is our hope that they will be rehabilitated and reunited to their families as soon as possible,” Dr. Allen informed

Fayose pays labour for prolonged strike to stall impeachment process' - APC alleges

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has alleged that the state government is planning to talk the state civil servants into embarking on a prolonged labour crisis, in order to frustrate the impeachment proceedings instituted against the governor, Ayo Fayose, by the APC lawmakers in the state Assembly.

Speaking in a statement on Wednesday, April 29, in Ado Ekiti, Taiwo Olatubosun, the Publicity Secretary of the party cautioned the organised labour not to sacrifice general interest for selfish interest.

It was also alleged that some labour leaders have received huge sum of money from the government for various solidarity rallies in the last six months.

Olatubosun said plans for a politically-motivated industrial action that will last till the middle of June is in the works by the compromised labour leaders.

He said two options were put before the labour leaders at a meeting with Fayose on April 27 – they were to either choose to force a prolonged holiday from May 29 till the first week of June or for the government to trigger workers’ anger through half payment of April salary, that will force workers to embark on indefinite strike. He said the leaders chose the second option.

To set the planned strike in motion, the governor has offered to pay half salary for April, which labour would reject, leading to a disagreement that would spark a strike action,” Olatubosun further said.

Military evacuates rescued girls, women

The military yesterday evacuated the 293 women and girls rescued from Boko Haram camps in Sambisa Forest to the hilly border town of Gwoza, as it seeks clues to the whereabouts of the Chibok schoolgirls whose abduction last year provoked international outrage.

The 200 girls and 93 women were freed from four camps during an army operation in the forest, believed to be Boko Haram’s final stronghold.

The military said on Tuesday that initial enquiries suggested the freed women did not include the 219 Chibok girls.

A military spokesman said the rescued girls would be transported for final checks in Abuja or Maiduguri.

“We will take them to Abuja or Maiduguri for further investigation to determine whether Chibok girls were among them and where they come from.

Colonel Usman said many of them were traumatized. The military is flying in medical and intelligence teams to examine them, he added.

On Tuesday night, he had indicated that none of the 219 Chibok girls were among the rescued females. But yesterday he said he was not categorically saying none of the Chibok girls was among the rescued females and that they still needed to be questioned to determine their identities.

“Most of them are traumatised and you have got to put them in a psychological frame of mind to extract information from them,” Col. Usman said.

Women abducted by the group have been forced into sexual slavery or combat, Amnesty International said in a report to mark the anniversary of the Chibok kidnapping.

For parents of the missing Chibok girls, news of the liberation of hundreds of women fired hopes of seeing their daughters alive.

“Since I heard the news it’s like I’m in heaven,” said Esther Yakub, whose daughter Dorcas was kidnapped. “I’ve never doubted the possibility of getting her back despite the news that has been flying around about all manner of dangers that could have befallen them.”

“I’m just waiting for the moment when they hand her over into my arms.”

Amnesty International described the ‘rescue’ of the women as an encouraging development but only a small step in securing the safety of the thousands of women and girls abducted by the armed group since 2014..

The organization urged the authorities to ensure that the trauma of those ‘rescued’ is not exacerbated by lengthy security screening in detention.

“This development is just cause for celebration and undoubtedly an immense relief to the women, girls and their families. But this is just the tip of the iceberg; there are thousands more women and girls, and men and boys who have been abducted by Boko Haram,” said Netsanet Belay, Africa Director, Research and Advocacy.

According to a recent Amnesty International report, more than 2,000 women and girls have been abducted by Boko Haram. Drawing from interviews with those who escaped, the report reveals how civilians were executed, tortured, raped and forced into marriage in camps and towns controlled by Boko Haram.

In previous cases where women and girls have escaped from Boko Haram they have been detained for weeks on end for security screening. Amnesty International is calling on the authorities to ensure that their physical and psychological well-being is paramount.

“The trauma suffered by the women and girls is truly horrific. Some have been repeatedly raped, sold into sexual slavery or indoctrinated and even forced to fight for Boko Haram,” said Netsanet Belay.

“What they need now is medical and psychological care and support and privacy. The government must now ensure that it doesn’t add to their suffering with lengthy detention and security screening which can only add to their suffering and plight,” he added.

APC Blames PDP For Aregbesola's Failure to Pay Osun Workers' 6 Months Wages

The Osun Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC has fingered the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Governor Rauf Aregbesola's failure to pay state employees for the past 6 months.

PUNCH reports that spokesperson of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said this in a statement.

He said, ''The long and difficult battle to defeat the forces of evil that have squandered the nation’s wealth has just ‎been won comprehensively. This has now paved the way for a new, progressive and responsible APC government to take over the affairs of the country and end the suffering which PDP’s corruption, mismanagement and treasury looting have brought on Nigerians including workers in the state of Osun.

''This is a pleasant transition moment that requires sober, intelligent and calculating responses from all stakeholders in the state of Osun, so that we do not turn victory into sorrow by engaging in actions that will create more problems than solutions.

''Alhaji Mohammadu Buhari has promised to solve this problem, it is our duty to exercise patience and trust the integrity of the new President to deliver on his promise. Labour and civil servants should give the new leader a breathing space to demonstrate his integrity and progressive credentials, which is not in dispute, except in the evil consciousness of the PDP leadership in the state.

Permanent Secretary Suspended For Embarrassing President Jonathan

Ambassador Danjuma Sheni, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been suspended for embarrassing President Goodluck Jonathan.

The part of the embarrassment involved his alleged role in the controversy over the invitation of Nigeria’s envoys from South Africa few weeks after the diplomatic row between Nigeria and Morocco on issue of telephone conversation between Jonathan and King Mohammed VI.

A Source who spoke anonymously on the suspension said, ''The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been suspended and queried for embarrassing the President by not clearing from him before inviting the Charge d’Affaires. The President on Monday directed the Head of Service to query him and he has 24 hours to respond to the query.

''You will recall that that was the second embarrassment, this one came shortly after the Morocco saga. The permanent secretary was to be dismissed immediately, but for the civil service rule. Even at that, there will still be further consequence.

''As at now, a new permanent secretary has been redeployed to the ministry to replace him.”

APC reverses Buhari on AIT, says all accredited media free to cover President-elect’s activitie

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has reversed the controversial decision taken by President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to bar the Africa Independent Television, AIT, from covering his activities.

The party said all accredited media organizations in the country, including the AIT, are free to cover the activities of the president elect.

AIT journalists were on Monday denied access to Mr. Buhari’s temporary office when they showed up to cover his official engagements.

His spokesperson, Garba Shehu, cited family and security concerns for the decision.

“AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics.

“We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter, but for now the station has been asked to stay aside, because like I said there are some family and security concerns. They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standard,” Mr. Shehu said.

However, the party in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said the incoming Buhari Administration would not discriminate against any media organization, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign leading up to the recent polls.

The statement however enjoined all media organizations to observe the highest level of professional standards in carrying out their duties.

”There is a Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

”There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law, for media organizations which have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals. But such repercussions will not include barring any accredited media organization from covering the activities of the President-elect,” the APC said.

A lot of Nigerians had condemned Mr. Buhari’s decision to bar the AIT from his activities.

Majority of those who spoke on the matter considered it an infringement on press freedom.

Some however view the decision as payback to AIT after they ran a series of documentaries maligning Mr. Buhari during the electioneering campaign prior to the election.

A UK-based activist and strong supporter of Mr. Buhari, Kayode Ogundamisi, described the decision as a “disappointing”.

Writing on his Facebook page, Mr. Ogundamisi said although it is understandable for the President-elect to feel aggrieved about the activities of AIT, there was no basis for Mr. Buhari to ostracize the television station.

“News of General Buhari barring AIT is disappointing, the decision should be reversed, whoever advised the General to bar the organisation does not wish him well,” Mr. Ogundamisi said.

Also, an Abuja based lawyer, Abdul Mahmud, in a telephone interview, told PREMIUM TIMES that the decision to bar AIT was strange.

He said Mr. Buhari promised Nigerians change and that if he felt his fundamental rights were infringed upon, there were a lot of channels open for him to seek redress.

He said Buhari should have approached the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission or even a competent court of law.

Mr. Mahmud also said Mr. Buhari would be taking off on a wrong footing by declaring a media war.

“I have not seen anywhere in the world where the government wins the war against a big media outfit. In the short term, the government will be successful, but once the government starts making mistakes, other media houses will be drawn into the war to support the media group being ostracised by the government,” he said.

Mr. Mahmud also faulted the decision of Mr. Buhari on the grounds of privacy, as the place of his present abode, the Defence House, is an official building that is owned by Nigerian taxpayers.

However, some Nigerians also said Mr. Buhari acted within his right to stop the AIT from covering his activities.

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, Bashir Yusuf said the change Nigerians voted for is a change from having things done on the basis of “business as usual”.

Writing on his twitter page, Mr, Yusuf said right to free speech stops where one’s right to privacy and safety starts.

“When people voted for change, were they told AIT and the media will be exempt? That business as usual can proceed in the name of free speech?

“In the US they have barred media organisations from covering the White House on ethical grounds. Now AIT is involved, the heavens is about to fall.

“I am of the view that AIT and NTA’s licences should have been revoked a long time ago. They have serially violated the Broadcasting Code.

“It’s a fallacy that because you have the money to set up a private TV station, you are a defender of free speech and can invade my privacy,” he said

Ezekwesili At 52: Oby Is A Blessing To Chibok Girls Campaign

The #BringBackOurGirls group has described one of its leaders,Dr Oby Ezekwesili, as a blessing to Chibok girls campaign as she celebrated her 52nd birthday yesterday.Aisha Yesufu said knowing Dr Ezekwesili has changed her life and belief in human being as her doggedness and determination, have contributed to the successes of the BBOG campaign.According to her, “ Aunty Oby made me believe in a New Nigeria. I had given up hope on my country, Nigeria. She gave me hope for a better Nigeria. I was almost giving up hope. Things weren’t going well and nothing was being done to correct it but when I encountered aunty Oby and this group, I had great hope for the future.”In the opinion of another member of the group, Maureen Kabric, “Dr Oby Ezekwesili has done a great deal for the movement and for humanity as a whole, even as she has brought a lot of hope for the Chibok parents and many victims of the insurgency in the Northeast.“No matter how they call her names. No matter what they write against her, she has always remained resolute. She has been revered outside the country. She has done incredibly for this movement, for Nigeria and for humanity.“I remember when we were banned from having our sit-out by Mbu and how she stood her ground. She has done a great deal for us in this movement. She has been a rock for all of us and we wish her well as she celebrates her birthday.”For, Jibo Ibrahim, a member of the group, in an article on Oby, read at the sit-out, said “one evening in June 1993, a certain Oby Ezekwesili walked into my house in the Samaru campus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where I was teaching. She demanded what we were doing to restore the stolen mandate of M.K.O. Abiola. I asked her who she was and the basis of this direct approach. ‘I got your contact from Shehu Yahaya, a mutual friend in the Lagos branch of Concerned Professionals,’ she said. What’s a bloody banker doing organising street protests all over the country I asked her? The moment the police tear-gassed and beat us up in Lagos Island for exercising our democratic right to protest, I realised that without citizen action the military will turn our country into a Banana Republic, we shall not allow that she insisted. Okay Oby, sits down, let’s share notes, strategise and create traction in the struggle for democracy.“22 years later, thinking she had been softened by ministerial appointments and World Bank vice presidency.

Another Approach To The South African Attacks By Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Another Approach To The South African Attacks By Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

THE destructive attacks in South Africa on Nigerians and other sub-Saharan Africans are tragic and mindlessly wrong. The assaults sorely bruise the objective of inter-African harmony. They also put an eraser to the idyll of progress and domestic tranquility many people saw when gazing at South Africa.

The xenophobia is actually a lethal show of misdirected anger. The attacks point to deep, underlying ruptures within the South African political economy that actually have little to do with the presence of Nigerian or other Black Africans in that nation. Nigerians have become scapegoats in a fundamentally domestic struggle.

The Black populace is roiling because their economic plight has worsened since the end of apartheid. If prosperity had come to them, they would not have come to this. The political and economic accommodation between the traditionally White-controlled economic superstructure and the post-Mandela Black political elite is under challenge.

This model of governance has failed to make adequate provision for the bulk of the Black population. Due to his unique status, Mandela was able to give the Black population succour and hope while counseling them patience.

That great man is no longer there. Gone with him is the succour he gave and apparently the patience of the people. South Africans thus lashed out in frustration. They attacked Nigerians and other Africans not so much because our people were the cause of their woes.

They attacked our people because they could do so much easier than they could attack the actual sources of their ire and economic predicament. It is easier to destroy the wares of the local shopkeeper than to change the political economy.

The former merely requires an eruption of anger; the latter requires sustained political organization, vision and dedication. Thus, although they want political economic reform, all they did was to attack non-South Africans who provided goods and services to them at the neighborhood level.Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

While the government of South Africa may be questioned about its continued adherence to a political economic model that appears to have exceeded its best-use date, it is completely wrong to say the South African government had even a hand in instigating the unrest.

Thus, recalling the Nigerian High Commissioner is inappropriate and counterproductive. Instead of pulling the diplomat, Nigeria should name a high-level special envoy to visit the nation and engage directly with President Zuma. Nigeria should also send an Interagency Coordinated Action Team (ICAT) to South Africa to complement enhance efforts to provide consular services, liaison with police and security and ensure that affected Nigerians receive proper restitution. We should also talk to major South Africa businesses resident in Nigeria. It would help douse tensions and ill will here if they announced a plan to contribute to the restitution of affected Nigerians.

No recall: Some observers have questioned the swiftness and efficiency of the South African government’s response to the mayhem. Such is their right to do so. However, the South African government did not cause the problem. They had no reason for it. To blame the government is to increase tension and confusion, not douse them.

Tension and confusion

Recall of an envoy is usually prompted by an adverse act by the host government itself. It is not good practice to recall a High Commissioner for a tragedy the host government could not have prevented and one for which its appears to be working in good faith to end.

The recent social upheaval should be likened more to a natural disaster as the government had no proximate control over its eruption. To recall our High Commissioner might satisfy our sense of outrage; it would do little else, however.

The move implicitly signals to the South African government that we blame it for causing the outburst or for being negligent in the aftermath. Such a move would make it harder to encourage the South African government to act as we would like toward affected Nigerians.

The move we diminish our presence is the more we diminish the daily pressure on the government in Pretoria. The move we diminish the pressure is the less we can positively influence that government’s action. Pulling our envoy decreases not increases our diplomatic leverage in this particular circumstance.

Also, much of the world and many Nigerians in South Africa will perceive the move negatively; they will think we are abandoning our citizens during the height of their travail.  This might demoralize them to a material degree.

The absence of the High Commissioner for an appreciable period of time will undermine the efficacy of our diplomatic mission at the moment when that mission should be doing its utmost for that segment of our Diaspora in South Africa.

Special envoy: A more constructive step would be to designate a presidential special envoy to liaise directly with President Zuma and appropriate cabinet-level officials in South Africa. The official should be a well known statesman preferably with a prior relationship with President Zuma. A former head of state or someone like former Commonwealth Secretary Anyaoku would be ideal for the position. This step would underscore Nigeria’s concerns for its citizens abroad. It would also signal to the South Africans that this episode cannot simply be left to fade into memory as has happened in the past. The envoy would press to ensure that adequate security is availed the Nigerian community to prevent further incidents this time of tension. The Envoy would also explore ways the Nigerian community can be better integrated and accepted in South Africa. Most importantly, he will press the South African government to improve its ability to ensure such things do not repeat themselves on such a large scale.

Adequate security

ICAT: Complementing the efforts of the special envoy would be a working level Inter-Agency Coordinating Emergency Team (ICAT). The ICAT would be comprised of police and other security officers who would liaise with South African counterparts at the operational level to ensure adequate security for the Nigerian community and that the authors of violence will be apprehended.

The team would also have a strong consular component. Nigeria should use this as an opportunity to reach out to the Nigerian community in South Africa to get a better idea of its numerical dimensions and the locations where that community is most concentrated.

A warden or communication system should be established within the community so that people can be quickly apprised of emergency situations or major events. A small legal team with experience in comparative criminal and civil law should be part of the team. On one hand, the lawyers would check to make sure those arrested are to be prosecuted. The lawyers should also investigate the proposals for restitution the South African government will make for affected Nigerians.

South African businesses in Nigeria: To douse tensions here and show goodwill, major firms in the South African business community here should be encouraged to develop a fund to restitute affected Nigerians. This fund should be contributed to the Nigerian government.

Conclusion: In such a circumstances, our policy approach should not be determined by anger. Our policy should be founded on a wise, dispassionate assessment of how to best protect our countrymen when they are imperiled. Recalling our top envoy does nothing to protect them. We must do better and more than just express anger.

The steps outlined above – Special Envoy, ICAT and South African Business Restitution Fund – are practical actions that can actually help our people and the South African government. Nigeria and South Africa are the two major sub-Saharan African economies.

We should attempt to work cooperatively to the extent possible, even in tense times. This show of cooperation and assistance serves our longer-term strategic interests. We should extend our hand of cooperation because that is in the best interests of our people in South Africa. If the South Africans rebuff these or similar overtures, then we can examine the need to call home our High Commissioner. However, recall should have been the last resort not the first one

South Africa Must Get It Right: It Was Mandela Who Failed You, Not Black Immigrants – By Mazi Okwudirichiukwu Okwuchiukwu

Xenophobia as being carried out by the Black South Africans is an undeserved insults to the sensibilities of the Africans, and advocacy groups and Nations across the globe that in the past pooled both human, defense and economic resources bankrolling the African National Congress, ANC, led anti-apartheid struggles against the white Afrikaners’ supremacist economy and anti-social leanings then making lives unbearable for the Black South Africans. It could be recalled that when South African blacks were been harshly persecuted and oppressed under the White Afrikaners racist apartheid rule Nigeria and other African nations and Black diasporas were at the vanguard of the anti-apartheid policy and rule until the Western powers and institutions supporting the White minority rule were beaten down. Thus, they saw reasons and joined forces with the Africans and advocacy groups around the world and it led to the politically concocted trifling end of apartheid policy. Getting to this level and the eventual democracy in South Africa cost huge human and material resources of the concerned nations mostly led by Nigeria just to give the Black South Africans voice and respect for their human dignity.

The South African Black nationalists also suffered unspeakable oppressions, including mass killings, detentions, maiming’s, martyrdoms, resource depletions, exiles, etc. All these happened to get the Africa humanity rising for good. Thus, it is regrettable that the same black beneficiaries of the All African Congress, ANC led South African nationalism struggles bankrolled and supported by their African brethren and nations are the one committing xenophobic crimes and killings against their same saviour-brethren and nations for no genuine cause other than transferred aggression. The South African blacks, has suffered personality distortions making them underestimating their Africa values and worth, to the extent that their relationship with their African brethren was anything but unhealthy because they live debased thinking they are more superior.

On this note, if the motive leading to the formation of ANC as summarized in its website is that “The ANC is a national liberation movement.  ……….formed in 1912 to unite the African people and spearhead the struggle for fundamental political, social and economic change. ….. ANC’s key objective is the creation of a united, non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society. This means the liberation of Africans in particular and black people in general from political and economic bondage. It means uplifting the quality of life of all South Africans, especially the poor”. Then South African blacks are far from being liberated!

However, despite that Black Africans have been in power for two decades plus, today South Africa is far from having the above attributes as projected by ANC in its guiding philosophy. And there is no hope of attaining that enviable height if the today’s anti-social lives and non-inclusive economy of South Africa remains untouchable and unrefined for popular good. Then, South Africans need to give-up celebration of independence mortgaged and estranged; to begin a new beginning African centred Nationalism that would be all accommodating and embracing, which xenophobia is not part of it. Xenophobia in South Africa is a misplacement of priority and transfers of aggression and anger to the non-deserving other African nationals in South Africa.

The ongoing anti-immigrant violence in South Africa receiving condemnation all over the world has with time and going by its reoccurring frequencies and massive looting of peoples sweats plus attendant killings fellow Africans and Asians dating to 1998 receiving the tacit sanction and backing of the South African state while the South African police are failing to protect the victims of the xenophobia become a cheap resort and unholy transfer of anger by the Black South Africans targeted at the non-Black South Africans and people of Colour in South Africa.

The present xenophobic dastard killings and lootings has been traced to a few weeks ago call by the Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini on foreigners to pack their bags and go back to their respective countries. This, without hesitation had sustained the confidence of the South Africans, as they trooped out on to the streets, killing African and Asian brothers and looting shops and destroying property owned by the immigrants.

It is noteworthy that while we condemned the South Africans over Afro-xenophobia, the culture of African seeing his fellow Africans settlers on African soil is likeable to how the Yoruba irredentists (respect to Yorubas of goodwill) are seeing and treating the Igbo in Lagos and other parts of Yoruba lands as exemplified by the Oba of Lagos Rilwan  Akiolu’s recent death threats to Igbo Nigerians that if they failed to vote for his choice Lagos Governorship candidate during the recent 2015 election “they will all perish in the Lagoon (water)”. It is also at the backgrounds of the roots of the wanton killings of the Igbos and destructions of their property in other parts of Nigeria especially the Northern part; all because of their economic progress and investments. This is what the Islamist terrorist Boko Haram has come to compound while sparing no colour, belief nor tribe, including those who appeared indifferent to the yearlong destruction of the Igbos’ and their humanity.

Though, South African Foreign Minister, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, has done the talking declaring that: “We believe that working together we can defeat this demon”. The truth, however, lies in heeding the call by Malawian Information Minister, Kondwani Nankhumwa, on South Africa to provide greater protection for immigrants, resonating demands from China, Nigeria and the African Union calling for an end to this racial mess, whether called xenophobia or Afro-phobia. While South Africa is free to play to the gallery protesting Nigeria’s diplomatic severance with South Africa leading to withdrawal of her High Commissioner to South Africa, they should see it as a laud statement protesting that we (Africans) invested a lot both human and economic wise including defence during the anti-apartheid struggle and do not deserve the xenophobic attacks and treatment from our South African brethren we suffered to liberate.

However, the moves by some African governments to evacuate their nationals from South Africa will not solve the periodic outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence which have been ongoing and ever-reoccurring in South Africa blamable on high unemployment; officially around 25 per cent which some economic experts say is really much higher, prevalent poverty and conspicuous income discriminations and disparities. These are traceable to economic inequalities between the White and Black South Africans caused by Pa. Nelson Mandela’s greed for power leading to his sabotage of the South African Nationalism when he went into negotiations with the Apartheid led White South Africa all alone, after his initial rejection of the offer rooting for ANC involvement and its unbanning.

For Nelson Mandela to be freed and be made 1st Black President of the post-apartheid South Africa, he signed-away three things that would have seen Black South Africa rising; and so the white racists South Africans kept its strangle-holds and control on the South Africa economy. What Mandela signed away are (a) Dismantling of the Apartheid South Africa Nuclear Power plant, (b) None Redistribution of the Illegally Acquired Lands seeing the Black South Africans living in ghettoes and poor areas, (c) None nationalization of the South African Economy and (d) Equality of Status i.e. forgiveness of the oppressive White minority abrasive acts without having them stopping their ever evolving anti-social acts. These all together has seen the minority white South Africans controlling the South African economy leaving the Black South Africans out in the cold now seeing the Black South Africans more deprived, jobless and unequal.

From the above analysis, it became obvious that what Nelson Mandela got for South Africa is the worst independence in history and the brunt of it all is inequality in South African nationality leading to poor literacy level, high unemployment and crimes, killer deceases, prevalent poverty and conspicuous income disparities that are now the bases of the xenophobia currently on in South Africa. Thus grossly, a misplaced priority in economy regain and balancing; making transfer of aggressions to the innocent immigrant blacks and peoples of colour in South Africa a trend, whereas the White South Africa are actually the ones monopolizing and manipulating the economy to the detriments of the poor black South Africans.

The African Nationalist Congress, ANC leaders like Oliver Mbeki denounced and called Mandela ‘coward’ for betraying and sabotaging the South African nationalism just to be made President. ANC leaders are aware of this, but are hard to come to terms explaining such to the great followership of ANC and South Africans that the man they crowned “Mandiba” and seen hero of the Apartheid South Africa struggle worldwide, honoured with Nobel Peace Prize by the same West that created and encouraged apartheid be revealed as the main enemy of South Africans and African nationalism. Until, we Africans come to terms choosing and celebrating our own heroes and not the Imperial Economic Hit Men, IEHM packaged and promoted by the West, and World Bank and International Monetary Funds, IMF and other imperial killer institutions as “Distinguished Leaders”, “Technocrats”, “Authority Figures”, “Egg-heads”, “Human Rights Heroes”, we shall not come to knowing what kills us and or, who is facing us behind the veil.

The West deemed it wise to transfer Nuclear power to apartheid South Africa, to stood White supremacist interest in Africa but through Mandela wanted and got it dismantled when South Africa leadership entered the hands of the Black Africans. Moreover, without the redistribution of the Apartheid made possible illegally acquired lands and the ill-appropriated economy nationalized and or, balanced there is no how badly disadvantaged Black South Africans could be economically empowered. These, all together, have putted the Black South Africans in grossly disadvantaged positions, politically, culturally and economically; making South African Independence worst of its kind in history.

I was not alone on this cause making case that it was Mandela who sabotaged South African nationalism and struggle just to become president and celebrated “hero of Apartheid struggle”; as designed by the West. Commenting on Mandela’s economic sabotage and killer nationalism because of his lust for power when the ignorant worldwide media and leaders were celebrating him at death, Greg Palast in his article “The Mandela Barbie” dated Friday, 13 December 2013 posted inTruthout said: “Seeing the writing on the wall (and envisioning their blood on the floor), the white-owned gold and diamond cartels, Anglo-American and DeBeers, backed by the World Bank, came to Mandela with a bargain: black Africans could have voting power . . . but not economic power.

“Mandela chose to shake hands with this devil and accept the continuation of economic apartheid. In return for safeguarding the diamond and gold interests and protecting white ownership of land, mines and businesses, he was allowed the presidency, or at least the office and title.

“It is a bargain that ate at Mandela’s heart. He was faced with the direct threat of an embargo of capital, and taking note of the beating endured by his Cuban allies over resource nationalization, Mandela swallowed the poison with a forced grin. Yes, a new South African black middle class has been handed a slice of the mineral pie, but that just changes the color of the hand holding the whip. In the end, all revolutions are about one thing: the 99% versus the 1%. Time and history can change the hue of the aristocrat, but not their greed, against which Mandela appeared nearly powerless”.

Be it here professed that South African Blacks must get it right that it was Mandela that failed them and not the Black immigrants. Until there begins a new enlightenment programs and full economic nationalism and liberalization in South Africa that will accommodate the Black South Africans including redistribution of the illegally acquired lands to enable Black South Africans even embracing unorganized and organized farming; there will not and never be an end and or, solution to the under-developed Black South African economy making rooms for the frequent social crises like xenophobia. The said underdevelopment, also accounts for the poor education literacy among the Black South Africans including menaces of the Acquired Immune-deficiency Syndrome, AIDs highly prevalent in South Africa.

From the looks of things, and events after the seemingly apartheid downfall in South Africa seeing the Black South Africans free but in chain, poorer and economically caged; one can say with certainty that South Africa independence has no African cultural identity and African economic and political power that is all embracing and humanity bound. It was an extension of apartheid economic slavery now with African imprimaturs hidden in veil of freedom given and withdrawn before the full moon without the South Africa blacks, African people and world knowing it. All we need in South Africa is a new beginning Pan African nationalism and humanism cause capable of delivering open-economy where no one is neither oppressed and economically estranged base on his nationality, colour and or belief but be allowed to live fulfilled.

Buhari is Prepared to Grant Amnesty to Corrupt Politicians -Fayemi

Dr. Kayode Fayemi has disclosed that Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria's president-elect will grant amnesty to politicians who return their loot.

Fayemi who is a former Governor of Ekiti and head of Policy, Research and Strategy Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign made the disclosure during BBC Hardtalk.

Fayemi said, ''Corruption is not going to be dealt with by punishment alone. It is also going to be dealt with by incentives to those who are prepared to have a conversion. If you come voluntarily and say, look, I have stolen some money and I am prepared to return the money, Gen. Buhari would not say no to that''.

''Returning the funds is a form of justice to Nigeria because those funds will now be available for the teeming population. There would be a range of options for dealing with corruption but that does not mean that justice will not take its full course.

''Buhari said he would not interfere with the judicial process and that if anyone is found guilty of malfeasance or corruption then that the law would take its course. Buhari didn’t mention any individual but anyone who is found guilty or who behaved badly in terms of corruption would be brought to face the law'', Fayemi said.

Forensic Audit Report Prepared without Bank Statement, says PwC

The forensic audit report on Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) compiled by PricewaterHouseCoopers (PwC) was done without bank statements, the report said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), according to the report, shunned the auditors’ request for the bank statements.

PwC stated in the revenue section of the report that “up till the time of writing this report, our request for bank statements from CBN was not responded to,” PwC said in the revenue section of the report, which depicts the NNPC as an organization with chaotic procedure.

As a result of this “limitation”, PwC said it “relied on the account statements obtained from other stakeholders to carry out our independent check on the remittances made”.

PwC was engaged to carry out the forensic audit with a letter dated 5 June, 2014 by the Ministry of Finance in the wake of the missing $20 billion allegation by the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who is now the Emir of Kano.

The audit report, though called “forensic”, may not be considered a detailed financial audit of Nigeria’s carbon deposit industry activities because PwC was quick to state that it  “examined crude oil production records only rather than crude oil and gas as per the signed contract”.

This review addressed three key areas, namely the outcome of the Senate Committee hearings, the total crude oil liftings by NNPC from all terminals in the period and the total revenue generated from crude oil from January 2012 to July 2013.  The audit report disclosed that the activities of the NNPC led to the under-valuation of $32,909,590 relating to 13 liftings (equity and domestic crude) during the review period.

These differences, the report noted, resulted in value loss to the federation. One of such differences is the under-valuation of $1,503,540.

PwC stated that “of the $33 million, Crude Oil Marketing Division  (COMD) of the NNPC agreed that for two liftings (with an under-valuation of $1,503,540), they had made valuation errors by computing the amounts due using a different pricing option in one case and a wrong Official Selling Price (OSP) in the other”.

The auditors added that there was another under reporting to the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) of $2,107,275. According to the report, ”for four other liftings with differences totaling $2,107,275, the unit prices on the schedule received did not agree with our recomputation. We checked the liftings to COMD’s valuation documents and observed that the prices agree with our recomputation but were just different on the schedule provided. However, the different valuations on the schedule were also used in the monthly FAAC reports; as such, the errors resulted in lower remittances to FAAC”.

There were other accounting infractions discovered by the auditors. According to PwC, “the total cash remitted into the Federation accounts from crude oil liftings for the period under review amounted to $50.81 billion”. “We were able to trace $49.33bn of this amount to the FGN bank accounts. The balance of $1.48billion was also traced to the FAAC report for subsequent months. $3.81billion is the difference between $50.81billion and the $47billion amount reported by the Senate Reconciliation Committee. This difference was as a result of the following:

FIRS remittance – We verified additional $1 billion revenue generated by FIRS, which was not reported by the Reconciliation Committee. We also traced the payment of this amount to the CBN/FIRS JP Morgan account.

Other third party financing remittance – $1.37billion was received from the third party financing arrangements. The arrangement with TEPNL resulted in the payment of $211million to the Federation from the USAN Field TMP project which represents Royalty and Profit oil, while the sum of $1.16billion was received from MPNL from the Satellite Field and Reserve Development projects.

NPDC remittance – Cash payments of $1.7billion representing Petroleum Profit Tax and Royalties had been remitted.

Equity crude and DPR royalty oil remittance – The remittance received from Equity crude sales, and in favour of DPR royalty oil, was $0.16 billion higher and $0.42billion lower than the Senate Reconciliation Committee figures respectively.”

The forensic audit report noted that “Mobil Producing Nigeria Limited, in its submission to the Senate, reported revenue figures of $518million and $859million in respect of the Reserve Development Project (RDP) and Satellite Field Development Project (SFD) respectively. Total E&P reported a revenue figure of $1.053 billion7 in respect of the USAN project. These amounts represent royalty and profit oil due to the Federation Account from these third party financing arrangements. The total revenue generated from third party financing arrangement was $2.43billion and not $2 billion reported by the Reconciliation Committee.”

With regards to undisclosed remittance to the Federation Account, out of the total revenue reported by MPNL, $1.158billion had been remitted to the Federation Account as at November 2013. This was confirmed by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation at the presentation to the Senate Committee.”

However, PwC traced these payments to the CBN/NNPC JP Morgan account. The total of $858,750,972 relating to SFD had been remitted while $300,000,000 out of the $518,069,354 relating to RDP had been remitted. The balance of $218,069,354 was withheld to service the project finance cost and subsequent remittance of the net amount, in accordance with the contract terms.

In respect of the USAN project handled by Total E&P Nigeria Limited, $193,478,061.15 and $17,943,616 totaling $211,421,677, being Royalty and Profit Oil was remitted to the Federation account.

There were cash payments of $863 million by NPDC to FIRS not captured by Reconciliation Committee. PwC noted that “NPDC was yet to be assessed for tax by the FIRS. However, the company made several cash payments during and after the period which amounted to $863million. These payments were confirmed by FIRS to have been received. We also traced the payments to CBN/FIRS bank statements with JP Morgan.”

“For the period under review, NPDC made several payments to DPR based on self-estimated royalty. We traced several cash payments made by the company to CBN/DPR JP Morgan account statement,  to the tune of $839 million but this was also not captured by the reconciliation committee.

Fayose, APC, PDP lawmakers hold peace meeting tomorrow

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers and seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers are to meet tomorrow to resolve the raging impeachment crisis rocking the state.

The meeting is at the instance of the state’s elders led by an eminent lawyer and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola.

The peace meeting is scheduled to hold at ABUAD and will bring the warring factions together in a face-to-face interactive session for the first time since the crisis erupted last November.

Fayose, in a statement he signed on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, has pledged his readiness to be committed to peace moves.

The governor said he was committed to the peace move to end the crisis and restore the state to the path of peace, prosperity and development.

He said the peace of Ekiti State is far above all interests and therefore everyone should support the elders’ peace efforts.

His words: “Ekiti elders, under the leadership of our highly respected legal icon Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), called a meeting between the two factions of the House of Assembly to resolve political crisis and I  have no objection because the peace of Ekiti is far and above all other interests.

“The meeting is scheduled to hold at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti at 11am tomorrow.

“I, therefore, call on everybody to support this peace move and no one should do anything to undermine it.

“Knowing how agitated and concern the people of Ekiti have been on this crisis, I wish to urge our people to give this peace effort a chance.

“I urge security agencies to see to it that adequate security is provided before, during and after the meeting.

“I thank Ekiti people for their unflinching support for the government and appeal to them to continue to maintain peace, bearing in mind that no society can progress in an atmosphere of rancour.”

Prophecy: Buhari Must Cleanse Aso Rock Else He'll Die in Office -Prophet Tibetan

Prophet Marcus Korede Tibetan of the Celestial Church of Christ, Elijah Parish, Lagos has issued another set of prophecies concerning Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and Ayo Fayose.

According to ENCOMIUM, for Nigeria the prophet said, ''the Lord said there’s going to be change. He said we should congratulate Nigerians for taking the strong decision to liberate themselves from bad leadership. The Lord said Nigerians should welcome the spirit of change as it is taking place not just only in the political arena but across all families and up to the kitchens in various homes. God said He is the One that brought this change and all Nigerians must embrace it and be in the spirit of WAI (War Against Indiscipline)''.

Speaking to Buhari, he said, ''if General Buhari want to run his term successfully and does not want the fate of late President Umar Yar’Adua to befall him, he must make a complete and total cleansing of Aso Rock Villa before he moves in. Between now and when he would be sworn in, General Buhari must not step into Aso Rock Villa for any meeting either in the day or in the night. And after he is sworn in on May 29, he must ensure that America, Britain and Germany help him snoop around the entire Aso Rock vicinity to detect anything that might have been planted in there for him. An entirely new security measure should be put in place to ensure the total security and safety of the new landlord. Until then, the General could run his own “White House” from anywhere but Aso Rock''.

On Fayose, the prophet said, ''The Lord does not do mistake with his words, Ayo Fayose has just nine months to stay on that seat after which he will be going to jail. I don’t really have much to say on this. I have told you what the Lord will do on December 20 when I was launching my prediction book in Nigeria. Ayo Fayose will not see the end of 2015 as Ekiti State Governor''.

Chibok girls: Anxiety as army rescues 293 women

Chibok girls: Anxiety as army rescues 293 women

A wave of excitement swept through the land last night when the military announced that they had rescued 200 girls and 93 women from the Sambisa Forest. The huge widely uncultivated forest  is believed to be the last major stronghold of Boko Haram in Borno State.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) broke the news in three quick tweets on its tweeter handle.

The excitement was sparked by the feeling that the Chibok girls could be among the freed.

The DHQ said: “Troops this afternoon rescued 200 girls & 93 women from Sambisa Forest. We cannot confirm if the #ChibokGirls are in this group.

“Troops captured and destroyed 3 terrorists’ camps, including the notorious Tokumbere camp in the Sambisa Forest operation.

“The freed persons are now being screened and profiled; details later.”

The rescue of the girls and women raised the hope that they might be the 219 pupils of the Chibok Girls Secondary School, Borno State, whose kidnapping 379 days ago attracted worldwide outrage.

But the hope was dashed as the army, in a statement, said those rescued were not the Chibok girls.

Director of Defence Information Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade said: “I can only confirm the rescue this afternoon of 200 girls and 93 women in different camps in the forest.

“We are yet to determine their origin as all the freed persons are now being screened and profiled. Please don’t misquote me on their origin. We will provide more details later.”

A top military source gave an insight into the operation that led to the rescue. He said: “This operation was mainly carried out by Nigerian troops; none of the multinational forces was involved.

“Those liberated from Sambisa Forest have been moved to a military camp established as a transit camp. Many of them are receiving medication as I am talking to you.

“One obvious thing we have discovered so far is that many of them had been traumatised and psychologically disturbed. We are already interacting with them.

Another source said: “Many Boko Haram members were killed in the encounters between troops and the insurgents in Sambisa Forest before the 293 women could be set free. We will release figures and appropriate photographs after preliminary mop up operation.

“Most of the Boko Haram commanders are also on the run but we will get them wherever they go.

“The operation in Sambisa Forest is ongoing because intelligence report indicated that there could be up to 50 camps in the area.”

PRNigeria, a military information strategist, said: “At least three major terrorists camps have been destroyed in the well-coordinated attacks that include the destruction of the notorious Tokumbere camp in the Sambisa Forest.”

A senior military source said: “The Chibok girls are not among rescued hostages. Those rescued are persons recently kidnapped from Damboa and Gwoza. They were all rescued in one of the four camps inside the Sambisa Forest.

The Military is hopeful that more hostages will be rescued alive from the remaining three camps.”

The army’s statement, signed by the acting Director Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said: “This is to inform you that our gallant troops have been making progress in the desired aim of ridding the nation of terrorists and their sanctuaries.

“It is heartwarming to inform you that today; troops continued the offensive and cleared four key terrorists’ camps in Sambisa forest, Borno State.

“So far, they have destroyed and cleared Sassa, Tokumbere & two other camps in the general area of Alafa, all within the Sambisa forest.

“The troops rescued 200 abducted girls (not Chibok girls) and 93 women. They are at present being processed.

“Similarly, a number of equipment and weapons have been captured. We will send further details and photographs soon.”

Before the army’s statement, former Minister of Education Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, one of the leaders of the BringBackOur Girls campaigners, in a tweet said:

“We rejoice for news of rescue of several of our female citizens from Sambisa Forest by our Military, according to DefenceInfoNG.”

She also told our correspondent: “Our hearts are palpitating and we can’t wait to see if the rescued ladies are actually our girls. We are waiting to hear from the military but the number is so close.”

The men were allowed to see their families for the last time not long ago.

The Australian, Andrew Chan used the opportunity to get married to his girlfriend of a long time.

Andrew Chan, 31, married his Indonesian girlfriend Febyanti Herewila in a ceremony on Nusakambangan Island, home to several high-security prisons.

Michael Chan, the convict’s brother, urged the country’s president to show compassion to the newlyweds.

Micheal said:“He could be put to death by firing squad as soon as Tuesday, along with seven other foreign drug convicts, after authorities at the weekend gave then formal notice of their executions” the brother said.

“We’ve had a special day today. We’ve celebrated with some family and close friends.

“Hopefully the president will show some compassion, some mercy, so these two young people can carry on with their lives. It’s in the president’s hands,” he added.

A Filipina woman was sparred from being executed at the last-minute.

Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso was left out after the person who recruited her as a drug courier surrendered to police, the Jakarta Post reports.

Indonesia has some of the toughest drug laws in the world and ended a four-year moratorium on executions in 2013.

Obiageli Ezekwesili Accuses Army Of Human Rights Violations In War Against Boko Haram

Co founder of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and former Nigerian Minister of Education told Al Jazeera that the Nigerian military are guilty of human rights abuses in their fight against the violent group Boko Haram in the north of the country.

The former World Bank vice president for Africa, told Al Jazeera’s Head to Head “It clearly does have instances where human rights violations have happened” .
Obiageli Ezekwesili Accuses Army Of Human Rights Violations In War Against Boko Haram
Oby told host Mehdi Hasan and an audience at the Oxford Union that one year over 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped in Chibok, northern Nigeria, by Boko Haram, the #BringBackOurGirls campaign was not a failure. “No, I wouldn’t say that we have failed. I would say that we have not been able to move the elephant.”

Oby blamed the President Goodluck Jonathan administration for the failure to secure the freedom of the kidnapped girls and said it was still possible to defeat Boko Haram.

Oby said that Nigeria has a political class problem but she refused to put her former boss and mentor President Olusegun Obasanjo, who ruled between 1999 and 2007 on blast.

She however said that OBJ was “aware of the elements of corruption, and it was his responsibility to tackle” them, but denied that he was corrupt during his administration.

She said: “Of course it [the government] was [corrupt]! [But] There was no way it could have been more corrupt than the government of Abacha”.

Oby said that they failed to fully tackle corruption during OBJ’s term and denied being a window dressing for a corrupt regime.
She insisted that she was not a politician despite holding two ministerial positions in the Nigerian government, being an advisor to presidents and holding high office at the World Bank.

Ezekwesili and Hasan talked about the widespread poverty, inequality and corruption as the reason why Boko Haram insurgency began, and debated whether World Bank policies have helped or hurt Africa’s development.

Oby Ezekwesili is known in Nigeria as “Madam Due Process” due to her fierce anti-corruption drive.

Oby founded Transparency International in 1996 and was an advisor to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and served in two of his cabinets as Minister of Education and Minister of Solid Minerals between 2003 and 2007.

She became a the vice president of the World Bank for Africa, where she stayed until 2012.

Hausa Community Says Fayose Not Oppressing It

The Ekiti state Hausa community has rejected ever accusing governor Ayodele Fayose of supposedly clamping down on them and crippling their businesses in the state for not voting for the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan during the March 28 presidential election.

In a comment issued by its leader, Alhaji Musa Kanga, they said barring of selective display of goods, mainly on highways, by the government should not be linked to politics.
The community distanced itself from the rumour, saying it was targeted at making friction between the government and the Arewa people who have co-existed in a mutual manner since Fayose came on board last year.

The body was responded to the rumour hovering around that the barring of products from being exhibited on Fajuyi- Adebayo-Opopogbooro road, a place dominated by Hausa traders by the state government, was a campaign against Hausa people for voting Major Gen Muhammadu Buhari during the election.

The Hausa community said: “Anybody, irrespective of tribe or State of origin contravening environmental law should be sanctioned according to the law.

“That the government decided to act to prevent violation of the law, such should not be linked to politics or be perceived to translate to a clampdown on Hausas for not voting President Jonathan during the presidential poll.

“Election has come and gone and the governor must be allowed peace of mind to govern the State properly.”

Peter Ayodele Fayose was the PDP flag bearer in the 2014 Governorship election in Ekiti state slated for June 21, 2014. He won the election and has been declared by the electoral commission as the new governor.

APC lawmakers at the Ekiti state House of Assembly have served Fayose an impeachment notice, and have given him 7 days to react. This would make him the first Nigerian governor to be impeached twice in office.

Filipina Spared From Execution In Last Minute

Mary Jane Veloso was spared from death by firing squad in response to a request from Filipino authorities after a woman who allegedly gave her a suitcase with a false bottom containing 2.6 kg of heroin gave herself up to police in the Philippines on Tuesday. The request came last minutes before the execution. However, the other convicts, including four Nigerians, had to face a firing squad. Here are their last minutes:
11pm-11.30pm (Indonesian time)

A firing squad of twelve policemen gathered at the execution site. They were given wages of less than $100 for execution.
Policemen take position ten steps from where the inmates will be positioned.
The commander loads each policeman’s rifle with one round. Only three of twelve are live ammunition.

11.30-11.59 p.m. (Indonesian time)

Sentenced to death escorted from their cells.
Their hands and feet bound and eyes blindfolded.
Sentenced to death can choose whether they want to be shot standing, sitting or kneeling.
After final minutes with a religious counsellor the commander draws a black mark over inmates’ hearts.

11.59pm-00.00 a.m.

The commander raises a sword and policemen fire their rifles after he swishes sword down.
