I’m Not In Any London Hospital – Buhari

07:59 my 0 Comments

2145608_bxyrzhcmaaizl1

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday dismissed reports that he visited a London hospital to attend to his health, saying: ‘I’m hale and hearty’.

Buhari was reacting to the allegation by Governor Ayo Fayose that the APC presidential candidate was being attended to in a London hospital.

But Buhari, who spoke to THISDAY from London, said: “I am hale and hearty. I am not in any hospital as claimed.

I just finished having talks with the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair, in his country home.”

THISDAY had earlier called Senator Bukola Saraki, who was with Buhari. He handed over the telephone to the APC presidential flag bearer, and the following conversation ensued:

THISDAY: They said you were hospitalised in a London hospital

Buhari: I am in London with Senator Bukola Saraki, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State for a short working visit.

I just finished talks with the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in his country home.

I would be having another meeting with the Awujale of Ijebuland soon.

Apart from this, I am also visiting some friends. As you can hear from my voice, I am hale and hearty with some of my friends around me.

Charly Boy Puts Up Notice Warning Intruders That He Shoots To Kill [See Photo]

07:53 my 0 Comments

Charly Oputa, the one popularly called Area Fada, is one man who loves stirring the hornet’s nest at all times and controversies are his second name.

2147718_charlyboy4121

He should know what it means by defending his territory and to scare away trespassers from his house, Charly Boy put up a sign that he ‘shoots to kill’, warning intruders that they will be violated.

He then took to his blog to write this interesting article about protecting his zone. But it is not just about protecting his property. Charly Boy talks about setting a boundary in whatever anyone does.

Read the interesting article here:

‘We Shoot To Kill. Trespassers Will Be Violated.’

“Why this provocative warning? Many may wonder, perhaps many more are careful to hang around my property, before they get shot for loitering, for nothing.

Well, just putting people on notice that I will violently defend my territory at all times; just like the dog and animals generally, pee on objects to mark their boundaries/territories. Yes, I don mark my territory be dat, no messing around.

Though I have not shot anyone yet, I will not hesitate to use extreme violence in defending my territory if push comes to shove. Yes, I will shoot to kill first, then ask questions later. Yesooo.

When there is heavy rainfall, we need umbrella; when our homes are dirty we need broom to sweep off the dirt, and when there is unfettered increase in crime/violence, we need weapons to defend and protect us and our loved ones at all times.

We all should know that we have a right to do so; and that we not only have the right, but also the duty to take responsibility for how we allow others to treat us.

We need to be able to tell people when they act in ways that are not acceptable to us; to either shape up or you trash them. Yes, like dorty.

Setting boundaries is not about manipulation or wanting to be a control freak. Mbanu! It is impossible to have a healthy relationship with someone who has no boundaries, someone who cannot communicate directly and honestly. It’s like playing football without a goal post on a pitch that has no demarcation.

Learning to set boundaries is a necessary step in learning to befriend ourselves first.

It is one’s responsibility to take care of oneself, and this is not possible if we don’t first of all, own ourselves.

Boundaries define limits; they make clear separations between different turfs.

One of the most correct perceptions about the CharlyBoy brand is that he won’t take bullcrap from anyone and he will speak his mind at all times on matters/issues without fear or favour. After all, him send anybody?

Going forward, we need to start becoming aware of what healthy behavior and acceptable interaction dynamics are, before we can start practicing them ourselves and before we start demanding the proper treatment from others, abi?

We need to start learning how to be emotionally honest with ourselves, to start owning our feelings, and to communicate in a direct and honest manner.

It is important to say our feelings out loud; by so doing, we are affirming that we have a right to feelings. Emotions do not define us, they are a form of internal communication that help us to understand ourselves and a vital part of our being, as a component of the whole.

It is vital to own your own voice, to own your right to speak up for yourself. There is no time to be weak and not live. Find your own method to tell people shut the Bleep up and they would. Shey you dey hear?

Mark your boundaries, don’t let people poo all over you or use you as door mart.

Enough of the nonsense, people taking advantage of people, fire burn dem

APC writes Jonathan, Jega on using military for elections

Determined to make the federal government comply with court judgment on elections, the All Progressives Congress yesterday wrote a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan and the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega asking him to give heed to the judgment barring the involvement of soldiers in elections.

The letter, dated February 16, 2015 emanated from the  Director, Legal Services of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN)

Though it was addressed to Jega, copies of the letter were also made available to President Jonathan, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff and the National Chairmen of the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party.

APC in the letter called the attention of the federal government to a judgment delivered on January 29, 2015 by Justice R.M. Aikawa of the Federal High Court, Sokoto and another by the Court of Appeal, Abuja, on February 16, 2015 which overruled the use of military in elections.

The letter read in parts, “I am sure all well-meaning Nigerians share your deep seated concern on the militarisation of our elections.

“It is therefore imperative your good office and commission ensure, henceforth, and until there is an enabling Act of the National Assembly, the court orders are obeyed and armed forces personnel are never again deployed in any form of security supervision of our elections.”

Justice Aikawa of the Federal High Court in his judgment on the suit marked: FHC/S/CS/29/2014 among others, restrained the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and INEC “from engaging the service of the Nigerian armed forces in the security supervision of elections in any manner whatsoever in any part of Nigeria, without the Act of the National Assembly.”

Justice Abdul Aboki, in his lead judgment in the Ekiti State Governorship Election appeal on February 16, held that “even the President of Nigeria has no powers to call on the Nigerian armed forces and to unleash them on peaceful citizens, who are exercising their franchise to elect their leaders.

“Whoever unleashed soldiers on Ekiti State, disturbed the peace of the election on June 21, 2014; acted in flagrant breach of the constitution and flouted the provisions of the Electoral Act, which required an enabling environment by civil authorities in the conduct of elections.”

Boko Haram suffererd heavy casualties after Chadian assault in Nigeria

Boko Haram militants suffered heavy casualties when Chadian troops pushed into Nigeria this week, residents who fled the fighting told AFP on Thursday.

Army-war

Chad’s army said on Tuesday evening that they had seized control of the town of Dikwa, which is about 50 kilometres (31 miles) southwest of the Nigerian border town of Gamboru.

The offensive deep inside Nigerian territory was a first and suggested a strategy to tackle other rebel-controlled areas in northeastern Borno state, which is the group’s stronghold.

The Chadians are part of a four-country coalition mounting a regional fight-back against the Islamists.

“Chadian soldiers took over Dikwa from Boko Haram after heavy fighting on Tuesday,” Bababura Diwa, who lives in the town, said by telephone from Fotokol, across the border in northern Cameroon.

Diwa said the Chadians came from Gamboru, which they previously recaptured, with heavy artillery power and overpowered a group of militants at Lomani village, 15 kilometres from Dikwa.

“When they came into Dikwa there was intense fighting but at last they subdued the Boko Haram fighters,” he added.

Odogwu Mobilises Ijaws For Delta PDP Candidates

As the 2015 general elections draw closer, a PDP chieftain, Hon. Tam Odogwu, has moved to mobilise Ijaws in Delta State to massively vote candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Odogwu who solicited the support of his Ijaw kinsmen at Warri, Delta State, said it was high time for the Ijaws in the state to work together to ensure the victory of the PDP in their local government areas and to join hands with other well meaning Deltans to move the state forward.

Odogwu said: “Delta State has been a political entity with stability and development since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took over the reins of governance.

“With the enormous development and determination demonstrated by the Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, Deltans have not been left behind in the democratic dividends he has brought to the state.

“The party primaries in the state have also produced credible governorship candidate, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa and his running mate, Mr. Kingsley Otuaro. These are men of proven integrity and ready to take the state to greater heights.

“The two democrats will surely consolidate on the current development in the state as their manifesto has indicated holistic infrastructural and human capital development.

“That is why I am mobilising strong support and massive votes of Ijaws in the state for the PDP governorship candidate, Sen. Okowa, which I assure him and his running mate, Mr. Otuaro that they will get the block votes of all Ijaws.”

Meanwhile, Odogwu who acknowledged the role played by one of Delta State development stakeholder and leader of ex-agitators, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, (a.k.a G.O.C Tompolo) for his contributions in stabilising the political atmosphere in the state described him as a pillar of Delta politics.

“It is worth commending of the strategic role played by this worthy son of Delta State and pillar in the state’s politics, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, a.k.a G.O.C Tompolo.

“Every Deltan can attest to this fact that Tompolo has shown that he is a lover of democracy and peace, which he has done everything to ensure Delta State remains the most peaceful state in the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.

“I urge Ijaws and all Deltans to support him and encourage his dogged determination and resolve to ensure the state remains united and focused, because he will still do more for the entire well being of the state,” he added.

Injects 83,645 Into Voters List

Injects 83,645 Into Voters List

Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, may have pulled a fast one on Nigerians with the announcement that only 68,833,476 Nigerians are registered to vote in the forthcoming general elections. However, a thorough check by The UNION, indicates that the voter list, as announced by Jega on January 13, and re-affirmed on February 17, as the working figure for INEC, contains 83, 645 names more. This means 83, 645 extra permanent voter cards. In essence, by the time INEC distributes a total of 68,833,476 voter cards, it will be left with an excess of 83, 645 PVCs, whose owners are not known. The UNION had subjected the figures published by INEC to checks. Both manual and electronic calculations of the number of registered voters in the 36 states and the FCT, showed that actual number of registered voters is 68, 917, 121. This is against 68,833,476 declared by Prof. Jega.

These figures are also posted on INEC’s website and accessible by everyone. While the Commission has maintained this figure as the true and certified number of voters in the country, The UNION can authoritatively state that the Independent National Electoral Commission is working in error of 83,645 voters, registered or unregistered. This cast a major doubt on the integrity of INEC as what happens to the excess of 83,645 is not known to Nigerians. Also, the calculations for zonal collection of the PVCs are also embarrassingly faulty. It indicates that the commission may have distributed more PVCs than it has declared. This suggests that some under-the-table PVC distributions may have been made by INEC. According to INEC, total number of PVCs collected as at February 17 was 52,275,367. But when this figure was broken down to zonal collections, it indicated that some 233,598 PVCs had been distributed.

According to a critical analysis of the figures presented by INEC, upon which it said 52,275,367 were distributed as at 6pm on February 17, a total of 15, 104, 626 PVCs were distributed in the Northwest zone, while 7,755,374 was distributed in the northeast zone and 7,863,515 PVCs were given out in the north central zone including the FCT. Similarly, the analysis showed that 5,646,542 PVCs had been distributed in the southeast while 7,755,374 cards were given out in the south-south zone and 8,589,387 had been distributed in the south west states. The sum of this, calculated manually and electronically, returned a total of 52,508,965 as against 52,275,367 published by INEC, on its website, as total number of PVCs so far collected by voters. The excess figure remains a mystery given that 83,645 more names are captured in the INEC list of registered voters as published on February 17. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission figures on the sub-head “Number of Registered Voters, (C) which totalled 68,833,476. However, the auto-sum of the same figures of the 36 states and the FCT adds up to 68, 917,121, registering a difference of 83, 645 which the commission would need to do some explanation about. What may have informed this kind of embarrassing public presentation of figures to be used for the elections.

Senate Doubts the Effectiveness of Card Readers

The Senate yesterday refused to give any definite response regarding the use of the Card Reader Machines introduced by the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) for use in the March 28 and April 11 general elections. Following the deployment of the Card Reader by the INEC to accredit voters for the forthcoming elections, the Senate on Tuesday invited the commission’s Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to appear before it and explain INEC’s preparedness for the elections. During the session, which lasted for three hours at the Red Chamber, Jega observed the challenges of the Card Reader. “Using the card readers has too many challenges. What if a card reader fails? What if a person is verified, and his finger print cannot be authenticated?,” he queried. He said that INEC has agreed with all political parties on what to do, if any of these arises. “In the likely event that a Card Reader fails, we have enough spares to deploy before the end of the accreditation at 1p.m. If we cannot replace it before the end of accreditation, then the election in that particular point will be postponed to the following day when a new Card Reader would be provided for election,” he said.

Reacting to the fact that the Card Reader is programmed to work for five hours, Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, feared that some electorate would be disfranchised. “This is a very practical thing. From what we have seen here today, it means that it will take about one minute to accredit a person. “You said that the device is programmed to work for five hours daily. Let’s assume that you commenced accreditation by 8 a.m., you will finish by 1 p.m., like you said. “If that is the case and from what we have seen here today, it means that you will only accredit 60 voters in one hour by one person per minute. It also means that only 300 voters will be accredited between the accrediting hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. “We all know that most polling booths have more than 300 registered voters. Now, if this is the case, the rest of the registered voters would be disenfranchised for the election,” Abaribe said. In her worry, Senator Chris Anyanwu requested for the place of non northerners, who registered in the North. She particularly noted with concern that some Nigerians from the Southern part registered in the North, but had to run away for safety. “Would they also be considered as internally displaced persons(IDPs)? Because they registered in the North, but cannot be allowed to vote in the South, where they have run to safety,” she noted.

Anyanwu also observed that Senator Chris Ngige’s finger could not be captured in the trial exercise on the floor of the Senate. In his concern, Senator Odion Ugbeshie wondered, if INEC would not be celebrating illegality through the Card Reader. Earlier, Jega raised fears that the Card Reader would disenfranchise some electorate. “The card reader will not read every finger,” he hinted. Jega also admitted that the Commission was managing a very difficult situation in the Boko Haram strongholds and areas of operations, especially in Maiduguri, Borno State. Jega could not guarantee that all the permanent voter cards (PVCs) would be made available to their owners, with about four weeks to the rescheduled dates of the general elections. He informed the senators that INEC was yet to produce 1 million PVCs from China. In his closing remarks, the Senate President, Senator David Mark, assured the INEC boss of the Upper Chamber’s readiness to assist. “We want to win our elections, but we want to win free and fair. Nobody wants to come back from the back door. We will work with you to ensure that you succeed in what you are doing ahead of the forthcoming general elections,” Mark said. The UNION recalls that the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma- Egba, on Tuesday said that the deployment of the Card Reader by the INEC to accredit voters is contrary to Section 52 of the Electoral Act 2010.

More Groups Support Jonathan’s Re-Election Bid

Many groups have moved into the support umbrella of President Goodluck Jonathan in the Southeast zone following a move by Governor Theodore Orji to deepen the support base of Mr. President among the sociocultural groups According to a source who confided in The Union, the surge in pro-Jonathan groups was sparked by complaints by several cultural groups across the five states of the zone that they were not being carried along in the movement for the re-election of President Jonathan despite their soft spot for him.

It was further learnt that Governor Orji, who is the coordinator of President Jonathan’s campaign organisation had latched on to the enthusiasm being shown by various groups to enlist them in the project. To this end, he invited all “credible and visible” groups to a meeting at government house Umuahia where the groups were welcomed into the campaign structure.Orji was said to have told the enlisted groups that the major task facing them now was to sensitize the grassroots on the need for them to collect their permanent voters cards (PVC).

He noted that the opposition would be strengthened when those supporting Mr. President fail to collect their PVCs, which would guarantee their active participation in the democratic process. According to the source, who is a member of one of the groups that attended the meeting with Governor Orji, all the groups welcomed their integration into the campaign organisation. He said that they expressed gratitude to the Abia governor for seeing the various socio-cultural groups and pledged their willingness and commitment to take the message of Jonathan’s re-election to every nook and cranny of the Southeast zone.

Jonathan vs the Generals

In the now brazen, even indecent, effort to bully President Goodluck Jonathan out of office, strange, unseemly things have been happening.

Reputations are being blown up, principles are being twisted, people are being told to act on faith and ignore the facts, and those peddling change are hiding the contents of the vessel.

For the reputations, the first casualty, to me, is that of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Pro. Attahiru Jega, a man I could have trusted with my choice belongings.

But when he repeatedly stated that the INEC was ready to conduct the presidential elections on 14th February 2015 when every fact contradicted him, he lost me, perhaps, forever.

Second is Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo. It is not that he had much of a reputation to begin with. I was an undergraduate in 1978 during the “Ali Must Go” students’ protests.

He lost me then, and I would never have voted for him as a civilian president because I know he has not changed and will never change. What he was in 1978 is what he is today.

I have had occasions to admire his courage. But he was Nigeria’s President, with all the prestige t he title confers. He cannot be ignored; he must be respected in spite of himself.

Early in the week, Gen. Obasanjo made a little spectacle of tearing his membership card of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling party in Nigeria, which provided him the ladder to be Nigeria’s President, not once but twice.

After the ritual, he declared to the audience that he has now become a statesman; confirming my point that he has not changed and cannot change.

Given all the education he received and the exposure he has had he was still ‘clueless’ about the word “statesman.”

He seems unaware t hat it is not a nickname. It is not a title you can stick to yourself at your choosing.

‘A statesman’ is a title others give you in appreciation of extraordinary service in the service of your country, for your statesmanship.

On the contrary, Burke must have had Obasanjo in mind when he wrote that patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

In January 2009 the whole world watched President George W. Bush leave office, handing over to Mr. Barack Obama who had embarrassed the Republicans by defeating their Vietnam War hero John McCain in a landslide.

At the inauguration ceremonies, everyone could see Obama in his humane, humble naturalness (Jonathan has a similar disposition, by the way) treat the Bushes with utmost respect, walking them the whole distance to the helicopter and bidding them farewell on their departure from the White House.

The Obamas returned for the swearing-in, watched by an enraptured world and a disbelieving, almost shell-shocked Republicans, some say, racist, America.

The next day, the Republican hailstorm on the Obama presidency began. It got worse by the day. It was unrelenting. Then in April, the Tea Party, which was the modern version of the Ku Klux Klan without the burning cross, was born.

President Obama could not get a single Republican vote for anything from the Economic Recovery Act to the Affordable Healthcare Act.

But as Republicans piled on Obama, for over two years, not one uncomplimentary word came from George W. Bush.

They had blamed him for their defeat, now he was further alienated by the Republican Party for not joining in attacking the Obama administration. Not Bush Jr. He refused to attack Obama, no matter what his party thought or said.

I’m not so sure of the event where President Bush had to speak with the Press and he had to answer questions. Soon, t he i nevitable q uestion was posed: Why has he never uttered a word against President Obama.

Bush is a good natured man. He chuckled, shook his head and said, “Being President of the United States is difficult enough, without the added pressure of criticisms from a former President.” He didn’t add to it.

In contrast, Gen. Obasanjo has since 2013 kept President Jonathan under withering criticism, none of it supported by facts or any shred of evidence.

His grouse: he wanted to anoint another candidate for president, and Jonathan seeking a second term was complicating his game plan.

One of the most sensational of his allegations against President Jonathan was contained in the 18-page open letter of 2nd December 2013: “Allegations of keeping 1,000 people on political watch list rather than criminal or security watch list and training snipers and other armed personnel secretly and clandestinely acquiring weapons to match for political purposes like Abacha and training them where Abacha trained his own killers, if it is true, cannot augur well for the initiator, the government and the people of Nigeria.”

Obasanjo was accusing a sitting Nigerian president of conspiracy to murder.“Corruption has reached the level of impunity. A nd if you are not ready to name, shame, prosecute and stoutly fight against corruption, whatever you do will be hollow. It will be a laughing matter,” Obasanjo wrote.

The above were in addition to scores of other deadly accusations each of which is capable of sinking any regime if it were factual or provable.

Indeed, in Jonathan’s brief response in which he denied all the accusations, he challenged Obasanjo to prove even a single allegation of corruption: “I urge you to furnish me with the name, facts and figures of a single verifiable case of high corruption which you say stinks all around my administration and see whether the corrective action you advocate does not follow promptly.” Obasanjo never picked up the challenge.

Obasanjo’s malice does not bother about facts or proof. Knowing that Nigerians want to believe the worst, it was enough for his purpose to invent the accusations and let it circulate among Nigerians who are most likely to believe them as gospel truths.

As every Nigerian could see, Obasanjo could not be converted into a democrat even after he was practically bribed with the presidency.

As president, he was the same dictator he was during the military era. Governors who crossed him, were impeached; those he disliked, were jailed.

Obasanjo and Gen. Buhari are two sides of the same coin. Like Obasanjo, Buhari cannot change.

It was the same mistake Nigerians made in permitting the generals to appropriate their democracy in 1999 by drafting Obasanjo whose primary mission was to cover up for the generals – the only mission he truly accomplished.

In other countries of the world, these generals would be in prison for corruption and gross human rights abuses as happened in South Korea, Chile and Argentina.

A hundred cases of gross abuse of human rights can be proved in court against General Buhari by a pupil lawyer.

The manifest conspiracy of the generals against Jonathan, who is a natural democrat, ought to raise an alarm inside any Nigerian who values democracy.

The generals d o n ot u nderstand democracy even when they are bribed to lead it. It cannot now be inserted in their DNA. It is too late.

In Buhari’s particular case, he is even less disposed toward democracy than Obasanjo whose raw survival instinct could force to accommodate the legislature. Buhari never accepted that he lost in any of his last three elections.

He always felt he had been defrauded. When he loses in court, it is the judges’ fault, not the law. He has no patience f or d ue p rocess. The Igbos say you can’t learn to be left-handed (leftie) at old age.

All the efforts to manipulate Nigerians into thinking of a different Buhari without any sign or proof is simply what it is – an effort to win an election by exploiting the credulity of Nigerians as happened i n 1999. History is about to repeat itself.

Woman Changes Name To “Abcdefg Hijklmn Opqrst Uvwxyz

After a Two-year battle, Colombian teacher of art and photography finally won her right to change her name to “Abcdefg Hijklmn Opqrst Uvwxyz”.

The 36-year-old, who lives in the Colombian capital Bogota, according to DailyMail, has a habit of regularly changing her name depending on her mood and prior to the latest change was known as Ladyzunga Cyborg. She teaches art and photography at three universities as well as designing fashion on the side.

She also has a passion for fetish clothes and bondage events and said she always feels the need to constantly ‘redefine’ herself and felt that it was now appropriate to have a name that was hard to say.

She said:

‘I’ve changed my name so people wouldn’t know it’s me. But it’s not because I was disturbed by it but because I wanted to always bring an element of surprise.’

Ms Uvwxyz,  admitted that officials had often raised eyebrows at her unusual names, but that her latest name change to become Abcdefg Hijklmn Opqrst Uvwxyz had involved her biggest battle yet.

Adding that she had been fighting red tape for two years in order to finally get approval to now call herself Abcdefg Hijklmn Opqrst Uvwxyz.

According to him, the communities liberated by the troops are Monguno, Gabchari, Abba Jabari, Gajigana, Gajiram, Damakar, Kumaliwa, Bosso Wanti, Jeram and Kabrisungul.

He said that troops had commenced a cordon and search operation in the areas involved in the latest operation.

Jega Appears Before Senate, Admits 1m PVCs Yet To Be Collected From China

Appearing before the Senate, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attairu Jega, on Wednesday revealed that up to one million Permanent Voter Cards are yet to be collected from China where they are being produced.

This is an admission that the electoral umpire was not ready for elections at the time the elections were postponed.

The INEC boss, however, said the the problem is not with the production of the PVCs but the collection.

Jega said over 66 million PVCs have so far been produced.

According to him, the 66 million already produced have been distributed to the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja for collection by their owners.

He said the postponement of the elections by six weeks was a blessing in disguise as it will enable the commission to distribute the PVCs before the commencement of the general election on March 28.

Jega is currently speaking on the floor of the Senate at the time of this report on usage of the PVCs and Card Reader Machines.

Corpse of rape victim dumped in Imo community

Confusion and apprehension have gripped the people of Umunneato autonomous community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, following the discovery of the nude corpse of a lady in their community.

Investigation revealed that the discovery was made a day after the world celebrated the famous Saint Valentine’s Day, at Okwu village.

An eyewitness, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, said that a close look at the lady’s corpse revealed bruises, especially around the breasts and private parts.

Although the witness did not completely rule out what he called a brutal gang-rape of the girl, he could not, however, identify the victim or give her actual age.

The witness said: “I am not too sure that it was a case of ritual killing because no part of the girl, on the face value, was missing.

“It is, to me, a case of brutal gang-raping to death of the unfortunate girl.”

The source said nobody knew how the lifeless body was dumped along the road at Okwu or did it.

Speaking also on the issue, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Leo Nwokocha, said the identity of the dead lady was still unknown.

According to the royal father, police stormed the scene soon after getting wind of the incident and removed the corpse.

The traditional ruler said he had no doubts that the police and other security agencies were on top of the situation, with a view to ascertaining who the perpetrators were and making them to face the full weight of the law.

The body of the girl had been moved to the morgue of Aboh Mbaise General Hospital.

Buhari masquerading as progressive—group

Yoruba leaders under the aegis of Yoruba Progressives, have accused the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari of ‘masquerading’ as a progressive within the APC.

The leaders in a statement by the Secretary General of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Senator Femi Okurounmu, recalled how the former Head of State reportedly attacked   progressive movement during his regime.

According to the group, Buhari insulted Chief Obafemi Awolowo, surrounded his house with troops and seized his international passport and shortened his life by denying him a medical trip overseas.

“The APC presidential candidate incarcerated governors of Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN and also cancelled the Lagos Metroline Projects.   President Goodluck Jonathan deserves a second term considering his achievements in the areas of economy, democracy, human rights and rule of law in the face of politically promoted insurgency,” he said.

No place for interim government -Mark

Senate President, David Mark, has added his voice to the list of oppositions to an Interim National Government in the country.

This was also as he assured that the May 29, 2015, deadline for the hand-over to a new democratically elected president must be respected.

Mark in a brief welcome address to the senators after resumption from a one month election break yesterday, expressed concern that the issue of interim government has been given undeserved prominence in the nation’s national discourse.

He restated that interim government was completely alien to the 1999 Constitution, noting that those who are pushing for ING are on a voyage of futility.

The Senate President said: “I am alarmed that the issue of Interim National Government, ING, has been given undeserved prominence in our national discourse. This is imprecise, sordid and strange. Interim National Government is alien to the 1999 Constitution (as Amended). Therefore, those calling for ING are pushing for an exercise in futility. This Senate is committed to the provisions of our constitution, which we swore to protect and we will not do anything to sabotage the democratic process.”

Mark who decried the current political tension in the country cautioned that as statesmen and women, the senate must rise to the occasion and help reduce tension in the polity.

Justifying the essence of the short address, Mark remarked that, “Ordinarily, we would have commenced our legislative activities this morning without a welcome address. But, these are not ordinary times in our nation. There is palpable tension in the land and the comments and even the body language of the political class further exacerbates the tension.”

Popular Pastor Caught With Hard Drugs Worth N609m in Lagos

The NDLEA, Murtala Muhammed International Airport command, has apprehended Prophet Michael Raji, a popular Lagos based pastor, for drug trafficking.

It was learnt that Raji, who is pastors a white garment church at Ikotun in Lagos, was arrested at about 12pm on Monday while he was trying to smuggle 174 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs to South Africa.

NDLEA said three international passports bearing different names were also recovered from him.

A team later led Pastor Raji to the church, where bags containing 91kg of Methamphetamine and 83kg of Ephedrine with an estimated value of N609m were recovered.

It was also learnt that a jeep was impounded during the operation.

It was gathered that a preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect was a member of a wanted drug syndicate operating in Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.

The 60-year-old pastor told investigators that he was tempted to the act by the devil. He said, “I received the drugs from my friend and I kept them in the church since October 2014. This is a great temptation for me and I pray to God to overcome it.”

NDLEA Commander at the airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, described the Pastor as a “smooth operator.”

Umar said, “The drugs were brought to the airport for export to South Africa. Investigation eventually traced the movement of the drugs to his church premises where he was arrested. He had three international passports bearing his photographs with the names Michael Raji and Kadigun Ola.

“It was equally discovered that the church premises, where he ministers, also serves as a warehouse for narcotics. The seized drugs, concealed inside large bags of foodstuffs, were found to contain 91kg of Methamphetamine and 83kg of Ephedrine with an estimated street value of N609m.”

The Chairman of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, said the seizure was phenomenal and promised that the pastor and his fleeing accomplices would be brought to book.

Federal Executive Council Approves Postal Reform Bill

Federal Executive Council Approves Postal Reform Bill

Plans to reform the Nigerian postal sector and restructure the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) received a boost with the recent approval of the Nigeria Postal Commission Bill 2014 by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The Bill will be forwarded to the Legislature to be passed into law. The Postal sector in Nigeria has grown over time with more than 1,200 post offices owned by government, close to 2,000 postal agency outfits managed by individuals, and over 290 registered private courier companies. However statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics show that whilst year-on-year growth is increasing, the contribution of the Post and Courier Services sector to GDP (at 0.03%) is still low. The Nigeria Postal Commission Bill 2014 is designed to reform and reposition the postal sector in line with global trends and international best practices.

It promotes a postal sector that is efficient, cost effective, better funded and capable of delivering service that meets universal obligations embedded in National policies and programmes such as the Transformation Agenda and Vision 20:2020. The postal sector is managed by NIPOST, therefore the growth of the sector is intrinsically tied to the reform of NIPOST. The process of reforming NIPOST began in the early 2000s, the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), through the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), started with objectives that included: Establishing a low cost universal postal service that provides a solid communication medium and link nation-wide, providing a safe and efficient postal service that is sustainable and keeps pace with development in the rest of the world, introducing private sector participation and the development of the postal service into a commercially viable enterprise and creating a convenient means of savings mobilisation and payment and/or funds transfer system for the entire country through the postal network.

However, whilst the conceptual framework for reform was developed, the process of its ownership and actualisation has suffered significant delays and action, and on some aspects has stalled. For example it may be recalled that a number of (private members) Bills to amend the Nigerian Postal Service Act, 1992 have been considered by the legislative arm of Government but none passed into law. Since 2011 and the start of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan administration, the focus of reform has been to promote NIPOST as a “necessary tool for the promotion of social, financial and digital inclusion”. The Administration has sought to restructure NIPOST along business lines through the establishment of a new management style that focuses on operational excellence, quality improvement, customer focus, result-oriented management, and cost control. In a bid to empower NIPOST to respond more effectively in a very competitive environment, the deployment of massive ICT infrastructural system with focus on carrying out ICTbased services, including on-line and automated services in post offices is being implemented (in stages). The anticipated result will be improvement in the quality of service and process efficiency, and through that the regaining of public confidence in service delivery.

Jonathan Remains Likely Winner of Elections – Campbell.

Former United States’ ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell has said that President Goodluck Jonathan remains the likely winner of the

John Cambell

March 28 polls despite the strength of the opposition.

Campbell made this declaration in a new report published and released by the US’ Council on Foreign Relations.

The report titled Nigeria’s 2015 Presidential Election: Contingency Planning Memorandum Update,’ read “The APC is stronger than its predecessors (Action Congress of Nigeria and Congress for Progressives Change) and reflects a splintering of the political classes.

“The government’s inability to defeat Boko Haram, the economic hardships brought on by falling oil prices, and a growing public perception that the Jonathan administration is weak has fuelled support for the All Progressives Congress. Though the APC’s voter base is in the North, it enjoys support all over the country, unlike the opposition in 2011.

“It is uncertain whether any provisions will be made for voters in the three northern states placed under a state of emergency because of Boko Haram, as well as the estimated one million people displaced by the insurgency.

“These displaced voters would likely support Buhari and the APC; their exclusion would benefit Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Thus despite the strength of the opposition, Jonathan remains the likely—but not certain—winner.”

Obasanjo is Nigeria's number one enemy

Obasanjo is Nigeria's number one enemy, he is a cancer in PDP - Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the number one enemy of Nigeria.

He equally described him as a “confusionist, who has lost his status as a statesman and Nigerians should simply ignore him”.

The governor, who expressed confidence that President Goodluck Jonathan will be reelected to complete his eight-year term, added that; “Obasanjo is only fighting President Jonathan because he prevented him (Obasanjo) from ruling Nigeria from his Ota Farm”.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said “Obasanjo is a cancer in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Nigeria that may never get cured in a lifetime.

“The moment Obasanjo is not the one controlling a house, he will want the house pulled down but this time around, he has failed”.

The governor said; “Obasanjo has always benefitted from the misfortune of others and he is living with the impression that he is the wisest person in the whole world.

“When Murtala Mohammed was murdered in 1976, Obasanjo was the beneficiary.

“In 1993, he said the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Chief MKO Abiola was not the Messiah Nigeria needed. Instead of Obasanjo to join the clamour for the actualisation of Abiola’s mandate, Obasanjo was canvassing for an Interim National Government, which he was scheming to head.

“MKO Abiola died in detention in 1997 and Obasanjo became the beneficiary of his (Abiola) death.

“Despite the fact that it was the blood of MKO Abiola that Obasanjo matched on to power, not even a street was named after Abiola throughout Obasanjo’s eight years as president.

“Today, Obasanjo is fighting President Jonathan, the man who has done what he failed to do for Abiola, the Yoruba people and Nigerians as a whole when he was president for eight years, simply because he does not want anyone to equal his record as Nigeria’s longest serving president.

“President Jonathan has made it impossible for Obasanjo to run his presidency for him and for this reason, he is supporting Buhari, hoping that he will be the one to nominate ministers for Buhari if he becomes president.

“However, I have this bad news for Obasanjo. Nigeria is not his football that he can kick around as he likes. President Jonathan will be reelected, and Nigeria will be freed from his (Obasanjo) bondage once and for all”

SHEHU SHAGARI THROWS A BOMBSHELL AT BUHARI: QUIT NOW.

FULL TEXT OF LETTER FROM ALHAJI SHEHU SHAGARI TO BUHARI
My brother, you have contested the Presidential elections 3 times in this country and in all these times, you have never asked me or my people at Shagari village to support your bid. It is very obvious why you can’t do that. You don’t have the courage after what you did to me.
You truncated democracy with a dastardly coup and took away power from me. You humiliated me and made me to suffer, and you took away my opportunity to RULE Nigeria. You said you do not want democracy in Nigeria.. The same democracy you truncated, you are fighting hard to get with desperation and diabolical power.
You have entered into unholy alliance with some known elements of disunity in the south but let me warn you.
You will suffer hard in the hands of Tinubu and his political merchants who will use and dump you as they did to Nuhu. In 2011, you cried publicly when you lost election, and you made provocative and inciting statements that plunged this country into untoward unrest. You provoked our hot-blooded youths with war cries which erupted into post election violence, that brought Boko Haram into existence, over 500 innocent Nigerians died instantly, most of them youth corpers deployed from one of the unifying agencies of this country. Personally, I do not have a problem with your ambition.
It is your arrogance that bothers me. If you cannot summon the courage to ask me and my family to vote for you because you know we would not, why do you think Nigerians would look kindly on your past record of destroying a progressing democratic institutions painfully put in place by some respected fathers of this nations like Awolowo and Azikiwe. No my brother. It is time to wake up from your delusion and do the needful if you still have some conscience.
I am not writing this to you with vengeance intention. I am a practicing Muslim and we leave matters of vengeance to Allah. I write to you as a Nigerian, your brother and a statesman who is deeply concerned. Quit the presidential race now and save this country from the dangling sword of Damocles being menacingly wield by the crooks who surround you. This elections is not about you or President Goodluck Jonathan. It is about the unity of Nigeria which can only be assured by being fair. By this I mean, being fair to the people of Niger Delta.
We can only do this by either re-electing Goodluck or substitute him with any of his kinsmen from the South-south as that can only count fair for a people who are entitled to 8 years in the office of the President. For the elders council in the north, we have come to the conclusion to work towards realizing that fairness. 4 years more is not eternity. It is not too much of a concession for us to make to move Nigeria forward as one indivisible and united country under one God.
May Allah open your mind to see reason.
God bless Nigeria.

EFCC Arrests Nyako’s Son, Abdul-Aziz

Barely two weeks after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, declared former Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako and his son, Abdul-Aziz, wanted, operatives of the anti-graft agency, have arrested the son of the former governor. According to a statement by the Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, Abdul-Aziz Nyako was arrested yesterday morning at his hideout in Gombe, Gombe State. He was immediately flown to Abuja where he is currently being grilled by a crack team of detectives who had been working on the Adamawa investigation for several months.

Abdul-Aziz, who was declared wanted by the EFCC in the case of stealing, abuse of office and money laundering, is currently telling investigators all he knows about illicit funds traced to companies where he has interest. The Junior Nyako who is currently the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senatorial Candidate for the Adamawa Central Senatorial District was declared wanted in connection with money laundering , amongst others.

According to the EFCC, “Specifically, he will have to explain how over N15billion funds belonging to Adamawa State was laundered into the accounts of five companies owned by him-Blue Opal Nigeria Limited, Crust Energy Nigeria Limited, Blue Ribbon Multilinks Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Blue Ribbon Bureau De Change” The funds were said to have been channelled into the accounts of the companies from Adamawa State accounts domiciled in a new generation bank by the account officer who incidentally is the manager and an in-law to ex-governor Nyako. The manager claimed he transferred the funds through verbal instruction from the former governor for purposes which are not stated. Investigations revealed that from 2007 to 2011 within Nyako’s tenure in office, before he was impeached in 2014, he had directed that all of the state owned accounts domiciled in various banks be transferred to the new generation bank . Abdul-Aziz’s company, Blue Opal, is said to own, among other investments in Nigeria, an estate in Abuja, while his father’s account officer owns several properties and investments scattered around Abuja, Yola and Kano. Former governor Nyako is however still on the run, and it is not clear if he will turn himself in with the arrest of his son.

Amaechi Blew Rivers’ N300bn –Wike…Owes Zenith, GTB, Fidelity, Access Banks N112billion

The lid is gradually being lifted on the management of the finances of Rivers State by Governor Rotimi Amaechi as Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who had been his bossom ally and confidant, has alleged that the governor cannot account for N300bn belonging to the state.Wike said Amaechi had mismanaged the money, out of which he also alleged, N11billion was allegedly given to Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to finance his campaigns.

Amaechi, The UNION learnt, had been pencilled down to become Chief of Staff to Major-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, in the event he becomes president. Wike, who is also PDP governorship candidate in Rivers State, further said that Amaechi’s administration is the “most corrupt regime in the country”, alleging that the governor had between January and November 2014 squandered over N298billion that accrued to the state from the Federation Accounts and loans obtained from various commercial banks. Barrister Wike further alleged that Amaechi had between December 2014 and January 2015, through the Government House and the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, expended N11billion, believed to have been channelled into the Buhari Campaign Organization.

A statement signed by Wike’s media aide, Simeon Nwakudu, and made available to The UNION, quoted the governorship hopeful as speaking during the Rivers State PDP Governorship Campaign Rally in Port Harcourt Local Government Area last Tuesday. Barrister Wike said that the massive corrupt expenditure of the over N300billion just for 2014 and the first month of 2015 excludes the internally generated revenue of Rivers State, which has been pegged at several billions of naira monthly. Giving a breakdown of the alleged mass corrupt practices by the outgoing governor, Barrister Wike stated that between January and November 2014, the Amaechi administration received N185billion from the Federation Account. He added that within the same period under review, the administration took loans from Zenith Bank, Guarantee Trust Bank, Access Bank and Fidelity Bank totalling over N112billion.

Wike said: “These are facts duly obtained from government sources. They are not newspaper reports. They are authenticated facts of revenue received by the outgoing government of Rotimi Amaechi. Before the people of Nigeria, this is the most corrupt administration ever seen in this state. This is an administration that has short changed our people. “From the details of expenditure at our disposal, these funds have been used to sponsor opposition activities and the campaigns of General Muhammadu Buhari. Most of the monies were channelled to non-existent or non functional projects, with the funds pocketed by the outgoing governor.

For instance, Amaechi paid N500million for a non-existent new bridge in Abonnema. He paid N2billion for the Trans-Kalabari road where nothing has been done by his administration. For the Port Harcourt Centenary celebration, Amaechi expended almost N1billion and he released N1.7billion for the production of international passports”, Wike said. He added that the outgoing administration expended N330million for the protection of Rivers State from terrorism. Also speaking at a rally in Obio/Akpor, Wike, who described Amaechi as a hypocrite, further said the governor lives outside what he says publicly. According to him, Amaechi takes N800million monthly as special impress while in May 2014 the governor allegedly took N1billion from the coffer of the state government for court cases against the Rivers State Government. Wike alleged that the court matter does not exist. Wike further claimed that in January 2014, about N6billion was released for undisclosed projects at the Government House. Wike, who was once Amaechi’s Campaign Director, also alleged that the governor allegedly sold a power plant in the state for $140 million and used $33million of it to sponsor APC presidential primaries in December last year while another N75 million was spent funding APC visit to Chatham House London..

Wike further alleged that in May 12, 2014 Amaechi released N5billion for the failed monorail project with another N1 billion spent on the same project last December while N2 billion was purportedly spent on the establishment of mega transport terminal. Wike challenged Amaechi claims to be fighting corruption and asked the governor to show the world any project he executed or completed last year, despite the huge internally generated revenue base of the state which average is about N8billion monthly. According to Wike, Amaechi planned to invade Obio/Akpor during the elections so as to perfect an alleged APC rigging scripts because Obio/ Akpor boast of more than one million voters out of the 2.8 million registered voters in the state. The former chairman of Obio/Akpor local government council accused the governor of not fulfilling his promises to Obio/Akpor people such as the building of a model secondary school in the area while several roads in the area are impassable due to neglect.

The rally which has a carnival mood featured performances by various Nigerian artistes while actors and actresses from Nollywood addressed the rally. The Rivers State PDP Governorship candidate said the lack of accountability in the Amaechi administration explains why he is fronting for known cultists to take over the administration of the state. He noted that the Rivers political leadership and the followership have jointly resolved never to allow another corrupt administration to emerge from the outgoing Amaechi’s corrupt regime.

Also speaking, National Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus alleged that the outgoing Rivers governor had procured Army, Naval and Police uniforms to be distributed to his political thugs from the state, and others imported from the north, to ensure that they rigged the election if it had been held on February 14. He said the same procurement of uniforms was carried out by APC governors, adding that the plan of the APC was to plunge the nation into needless crisis. Secondus said despite APC’s evil machinations, President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP will win the forthcoming elections. Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara, who also graced the event, said Amaechi failed the people of Rivers State by merely squandering their resources with no projects on ground to show. Also at the rally was former governors Peter Odili and Celestine Omehia.

INEC Officials Swindle Prospective Voters In Imo

Hope of the people of Imo State to elect their preferred candidates in the rescheduled 2015 general elections may have been dashed. This followed the reports around the state that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,are charging prospective voters between N2,000 and N3,000 issuance of their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs). Since the postponement of the election by the commission as a result of the insecurity and inadequate distribution of the PVCs, there has been an upsurge in the number of people seeking to collect their PVCs in various local government headquarters, wards and polling units across the state. This came as most employers in the state demanded the cards as a prerequisite for payment of January and February salaries to their employees. While the exercise was successful in some local government areas and wards in the state, it did not see of the state and in many other areas, it is complaints of extortion or between the sum of N200 and N3000. Some of the affected areas visited byThe UNION included many polling booths in Owerri Municipal; Mbaitoli Local Government Headquarters, Nworieubi; Obazu Mbieri and Obakuru Mbieri as well as Emeabiam in Owerri West Local Government Area. While no prospective voter has received the cards in the three wards in Atta in Njaba LGA, in Owerri North LGA, only three wards—Amakohia, Akwakuma and Awaka/Ihitte Ogada— out of the 12 wards have got their PVCs.

As at the time of filing this report, while the people of Umunam Atta were only told by INEC officials in Njaba LGA to report on Monday February 16 at the community centre to get their cards, there seems to be no solution for those of Owerri North LGA. This has since generated public outcry. This is despite the concerns raised by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Dr. Gabriel Ada, that the people were yet to collect the less than 60 percent PVCs available for the state. Ada had said at a press conference last month that “the statistics of the card distribution in the state is still below 60 per cent and this does not augur well for a full participatory democracy which we anticipate. This is totally unacceptable to the Commission”. He had stated further that, “given this, the Commission has recommended that we go back to the field for another ten days to distribute these PVCs to their rightful owners, but at the Registration Area (Ward) level. This is in bid to ensure that every Nigerian is given an opportunity to exercise his/her franchise.” When The UNION visited Holy Ghost College and Uzii Primary School, Owerri, it was observed that the INEC officials were charging people N200 before they were issued their PVCs.

One of the prospective voters who paid to collect her card, Mariana Ibeh, told The UNION that she “felt embarrassed when the guy there told us to pay N200 each before we could collect our PVCs. The reason is that I didn’t even come with any money apart from the one I was to use to jump keke. But a nice guy there just helped me out with the money.” Investigations by The UNION reveal that it is the same story at Uzii Primary School, Ikenegbu Girls Secondary School among other polling units in the municipal council where they told the people to pay N200 or they should go to the INEC headquarters. Similarly, at Nwaorieubi the Mbaitoli Local Government headqurters where hundreds of people trooped out from various communities to get their cards, there was an ugly skirmish between the INEC officials and some of the prospective voters over the high amount of money charged them to collect their PVCs by the officials. According to an eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Desmond, “we came here at Nwaorieubi, and noticed that the condition to collect the PVCs is that you will pay N500 and those with the money were told to queue on line. We were patiently standing on the line waiting for our time to collect the card”.

Trouble however started when a young man who claimed to have come from Port Harcourt told them to help him with his PVC, the officials were said to have told him to drop something higher. “Instantly, the guy gave them N3,000 and they abandoned those of us who were in the line to attend to the guy and gave him his own PVC instantly. This led to a friction and a boy switching off their generator causing them to abandon their work that day. This is too bad for our people here because many poor people don’t even want to come near to the area because they see any reason they should pay for a card they don’t derive benefit from”. Also, in Obazu Mbieri and Obakuru Mbieri wards in Mbaitoli LGA as well as Emeabiam in Owerri West LGA, prospective voters were made to part with the sum of N200 and N1000 respectively, though secretly.

According to investigations by The UNION, the style the INEC officials use is that when they look at somebody that can pay or somebody from a far distance, they tell the person that his turn to collect the PVC is in three days time, knowing that many people would not want to return back for it and are likely to pay for it. With this, those who have money are compelled to pay between N2000 and above. Also in a case where the prospective voter does not have his temporary voter card, he is made to pay even more. One of the aggrieved prospective voters from Alaeze Ogwa community in Mbaitoli LGA, Ubanze Chima expressed his feelings thus: “They are simply hoarding the cards but when you bring money, they will fish out your own. They should just make the thing open so that we become aware that we should pay before we collect”He added “Since they extended the date for the election, I have not seen them in any voting booth or ward distributing the cards, rather they seem to have also postponed the distribution of the cards.

The REC should direct his men to go back to town and start distributing the cards once again before any complaints arise again”. Ubanze described the INEC’s actions as a threat to poor masses who would now go and hide forever without collecting. Calling on the Hot FM phone-in programme weekend, Mr. Nokky Ebikam from Obazu Mbieri “In my own polling booth a woman was actually requesting for the N200 from people. When she saw me, she started doing as if she was joking. What I am saying is that INEC should treat us the way they treated those from the North whose traditional rulers and village heads were given the cards to share among their people. INEC should order their staff to go back to the polling units to start giving out the PVCs”, he state.

Another caller who called into the radio programme, Dr. Oben Obichere from Owerri North opined that the issue of the PVC was a critical issue in Owerri North. “It’s amazing that people are saying that they have paid to collect. In Owerri North, INEC seems to have no answer for the where about of Owerri North PVC. For those of us who registered in 2011, out of 12 wards in Owerri North, we have been able to get PVCs for three wards—Amakohia, Akwakuma andEgbu/Ihitte Ogada wards. “You can imagine INEC assuring Nigerians that they were ready to conduct elections within the next 24 hours. You can imagine the number of Nigerians that would have been disenfranchised if INEC had gone ahead to conduct this election on 14th February.

Even as I talk to you, there is no answer to the Owerri North PVC. Owerri North is not alone in this saga. INEC is completely confused and they look to me like a people that has different agenda altogether. You can imagine a war-torn Borno State has got up to 80 percent of the PVCs and more than a place like Lagos. To me Jega has a different agenda”, he fumed adding “since this postponement, you don’t see any INEC official in any polling booth”.For Mr. Michael Duru from Umunam Atta community whose community is yet to get the PVCs, INEC should allow those without the permanent Voters Cards to vote with their temporary voters cards since it was obvious that the commission was not ready to give out the PVCs to the people of the community. Reacting to some of the complaints, the Public Relations Officer of the INEC in Imo State, Mrs. Ben Okpara, said the commission could only act if it gets the complaint from the members of the public concerned. “As I’m talking to you now, I am in the office now. I am not in the field to know what is happening there.

So, my brother, do us favour by getting us the names of the people collecting money before issuing the cards. Get us the name of the polling units and the person from whom they collected the money. Through this way, we will be able to track down these people you mentioned. “But I can tell you that INEC is not collecting money to issue any PVC. It is not the practice here because the issuance of the PVC is free of charge”, Okpara said. However, speaking with our reporter, the INEC official whose identity could not be ascertained at the Owerri Municipal Council explained that they were not charging people but to make up for the logistics According to him, “It’s not as if we are charging them to collect their PVCs, but it’s only those who don’t have the TVCs that we charge a little amount for inconveniences such as the photocopying of the forms and the gums we use here. As you can see, it is not adequate for everybody that wants the PVC.”

Put Your House In Order, PDP Tells INEC

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Adamu Muazu has tasked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiry Jega, to put his house in order before March 28 slated for the presidential election. Muazu said the call has become imminent following revelations that the commission was ill-prepared for the elections earlier scheduled to hold tomorrow Saturday, 14 February 2015 and emphasised that the commission must gear it is effort at wholesome readiness for the big game. He noted that while the PDP was ready for the elections for February 14 and was certain of victory and already savouring same, the hope of victory was deferred by the commission following its inadequacies which clearly manifested in the huge gap in the distribution and collection of the permanent voters card and the total registered voters.

Muazu said this at a press conference where the top echelon of the party were in attendance at the Wadata House yesterday in Abuja. According to him: “Taking the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega on his own words, for the 68.8 million registered voters, the commission had only printed and delivered 66.3 million Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) with 1.3 million yet to be delivered and 1.1 million stolen cards yet to be replaced. “Also according to Jega, 45.09 million voters cards were collected by prospective voters representing 65.8 percent of the registered voters and 23.71 million PVCs, representing 34.2 percent were yet to be collected as at February 7th, which is exactly one week to the February 14th earlier scheduled date.

Compare this anomaly with the 2011 elections where not a single eligible voter was disenfranchised “By this account, INEC could not sincerely claim to have been fully prepared for a desirable credible, free and fair election at the time when more than 23 million registered voters were going to be disenfranchised. “Nigerians embraced the idea of PVC as a model to facilitate credible elections and not as instrument of disenfranchisement. “We therefore want to use this forum to urge INEC to use the period of the shift to ensure that it put its house in order and bequeath to Nigerians the desired free, fair and credible elections,” Muazu said.

The chairman said the party had already activated it’s victory mode and was waiting for the election to hold tomorrow and its victory announced and engage in jubilation but the commission has put that in hold. He said the party was affected by the postponement as other parties and wondered at the subjective comments of the opposition caution the All Progressive Congress (APC) to be mature in its politics that would deepen the democratic voyage of the country as there is no other Nigeria as this. “Indeed, we have noted the reactions that trailed this postponement, particularly the very subjective statements from opposition leaders alleging that our great party and the government masterminded the postponement to favour the PDP.

M.I Abaga Defend Entertainers Who Didn’t Contribute During OJB’s Kidney Ailment

In a chat with My Africa Podcast, M.I Abaga opened up on why artistes didn’t donate Money for OJB’s kidney complications.

MI said the fear of being ridiculed made many artistes not to give cash to the producer.

In his words;

“First of all, I have the utmost respect for Nomoreloss as a human being. He was definitely one of the people that had a platform that put us on. He is always showing me love, always giving me good advice.

“I haven’t seen him since, and I dread seeing him because, I can imagine that for that one comment, he’ll be disappointed. ‘Yo M.I, why didn’t you reach out to me.

“But this what happened; OJB was sick and people were trying to raise money. I all of a sudden went 0-100 broke, like instantly. All of a sudden there was letters going out, ‘like this person didn’t contribute, why would you ask a publicist (to write a letter), and it became a big thing. What caught me was the fact that Nomoreloss who was a fellow artiste, and he’s writing letters saying, ‘Why won’t artiste come out, why won’t D’banj speak out and say he didn’t donate this money?”

“Everybody was confused, every artiste was confused, so one or two things started happening. A certain artiste told me that he went and contributed the little money that he had, and by the time he got home, it was put in the broadcast, ‘this is how much you gave’.” And it was embarrassing because somebody else is giving N5 million, and you have your little N100,000.

“Already, everybody was in that N100,000 category, of which there was maybe 20, 30 people. Automatically it’s like ‘Yo, I’m gonna keep my N100,000, I’m not trying to be embarrassed. On the second hand, you have artistes, like myself, who were just confused, if we were to go, what would have happened, what would we see, because it had become a media thing.

OJB later got the help he needed when the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, funded the surgery. M.I Abaga recognizes that, but believes that more discretion and understanding should have been applied by Nomoreloss.

“At the end of the day, Nomoreloss can hold his head high because OJB did get help. But the comment in the song came from the fact that I remember reading back to back articles and people were just insulting 2face (Idibia); this guy gave you all the music and you couldn’t even even help him. People didn’t know at the time, 2face’s Dad who had later gone on to pass away from kidney complications was in India undergoing the same thing.

“I was privy to one moment when they needed money right there and then, and 2face was caught between Lagos and Abuja, he was trying to get money for people to send. It was rough for some people. People had issues every day, you know Iyanya lost most of his family in one year, but we never see that side. What we see is what you should be able to do based on our perception of who you are.

“At least not from a fellow artiste. A fellow artiste should understand, and thankfully it didn’t become controversial. That’s the truth of what I wanted to say in the moment.”

Obasanjo Rebukes Jonathan, Endorses Buhari, Warns Against Coup

08:55 my 0 Comments

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo who is a member of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) openly endorsed APC’s Presidential aspirant, Buhari after condemning President Jonathan’s administration for months.

Obasanjo, made his opinion known during an interview with the Financial Times at the launch of his controversial autobiography titled, ‘My Watch’, in Nairobi, Kenya.

According to Punch, Obasanjo said Buhari, who ruled Nigeria between December 1983 and August 1985, was aware of the challenges of Nigeria today and was qualified to rule the country.

He said, “The circumstances under which Buhari will be working under if he wins the elections are different from the one he worked under before, where he was both the executive and the legislature – he knows that. He is smart enough. He is educated enough. He’s experienced enough. Why shouldn’t I support him?”

Obasanjo said he was confident that Buhari would be able to effectively tackle corruption and insecurity.

The former President said Buhari would restore the morale of the military which, he said, was needed in the fight against terrorism.

He said President Goodluck Jonathan betrayed the armed forces by allowing corruption to undermine their operations.

He said, “It is a question of leadership – political and military. I think you need to ask Jonathan how he let the army go to this extent. Many things went wrong: recruitment went wrong; training went wrong; morale went down; motivation was not there; corruption was deeply ingrained; and welfare was bad.”

Obasanjo added that he was saddened by the rate at which the nation’s resources were dwindling, adding that when he left office, Nigeria had $45bn in its reserve but the resources had been depleted by more than half despite the increase in oil prices.

Reacting to the postponement of the elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission for security reasons and a better distribution of Permanent Voter Cards, Obasanjo said he hoped the Federal Government was being truthful.

He urged Jonathan to put the interest of the nation ahead of his own ambition.

He said warned that manipulating the electoral process could lead to a coup d’etat, adding that the May 29 handover date remained sacrosanct.
