Jonathan Has Nothing To Fear – Buhari

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has assured President Goodluck Jonathan that he has nothing to fear, stating that despite the rancour of the elections, he harboured no grudge against anyone.

In his acceptance speech, he said:
“Let me state clearly that President Jonathan has nothing to fear from me. Although we may not agree on the methods of governing the nation, he is a great Nigerian and still our president. He deserves our support and permanent respect by virtue of the office he has held.

“This is how an honourable nation treats its servants and conducts its affairs. I should be looking forward to meeting with President Jonathan in the days to come to discuss how our teams can make the transition of administrations as efficient as possible.”

He said, he would treat everyone as one, whether they voted for, or voted against him:
“I pledge myself and our in-coming administration to just and principled governance. There shall be no bias against or favouritism for any Nigerian based on ethnicity, religion, gender or social status.

“I pledge myself and the government to the rule of law, in which none shall be so above the law that they are not subject to its dictates, and none shall be so below it that they are not availed of its protection.

“You shall be able to go to bed knowing that you are safe and that your constitutional rights remain in safe hands. You shall be able to voice your opinion without fear of reprisal or victimisation.

“My love and concern for this nation and what I desire for it extends to all, even to those who do not like us or our politics. You are all my people and I shall treat everyone of you as my own.

“ I shall work for those who voted for me as well as those who voted against me and even for those who did not vote at all. We all live under one name as one nation: we are all Nigerians.”

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday dismissed reports that he visited a London hospital to attend to his health, saying: ‘I’m hale and hearty’.

Buhari was reacting to the allegation by Governor Ayo Fayose that the APC presidential candidate was being attended to in a London hospital.

But Buhari, who spoke to THISDAY from London, said: “I am hale and hearty. I am not in any hospital as claimed.

I just finished having talks with the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair, in his country home.”

THISDAY had earlier called Senator Bukola Saraki, who was with Buhari. He handed over the telephone to the APC presidential flag bearer, and the following conversation ensued:

THISDAY: They said you were hospitalised in a London hospital

Buhari: I am in London with Senator Bukola Saraki, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State for a short working visit.

I just finished talks with the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in his country home.

I would be having another meeting with the Awujale of Ijebuland soon.

Apart from this, I am also visiting some friends. As you can hear from my voice, I am hale and hearty with some of my friends around me.

Obasanjo Rebukes Jonathan, Endorses Buhari, Warns Against Coup

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo who is a member of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) openly endorsed APC’s Presidential aspirant, Buhari after condemning President Jonathan’s administration for months.

Obasanjo, made his opinion known during an interview with the Financial Times at the launch of his controversial autobiography titled, ‘My Watch’, in Nairobi, Kenya.

According to Punch, Obasanjo said Buhari, who ruled Nigeria between December 1983 and August 1985, was aware of the challenges of Nigeria today and was qualified to rule the country.

He said, “The circumstances under which Buhari will be working under if he wins the elections are different from the one he worked under before, where he was both the executive and the legislature – he knows that. He is smart enough. He is educated enough. He’s experienced enough. Why shouldn’t I support him?”

Obasanjo said he was confident that Buhari would be able to effectively tackle corruption and insecurity.

The former President said Buhari would restore the morale of the military which, he said, was needed in the fight against terrorism.

He said President Goodluck Jonathan betrayed the armed forces by allowing corruption to undermine their operations.

He said, “It is a question of leadership – political and military. I think you need to ask Jonathan how he let the army go to this extent. Many things went wrong: recruitment went wrong; training went wrong; morale went down; motivation was not there; corruption was deeply ingrained; and welfare was bad.”

Obasanjo added that he was saddened by the rate at which the nation’s resources were dwindling, adding that when he left office, Nigeria had $45bn in its reserve but the resources had been depleted by more than half despite the increase in oil prices.

Reacting to the postponement of the elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission for security reasons and a better distribution of Permanent Voter Cards, Obasanjo said he hoped the Federal Government was being truthful.

He urged Jonathan to put the interest of the nation ahead of his own ambition.

He said warned that manipulating the electoral process could lead to a coup d’etat, adding that the May 29 handover date remained sacrosanct.
