Mbaka congratulates, tasks Buhari on corruption, unemployment

ENUGU – Firebrand cleric, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu has congratulated General Muhammadu Buhari on his victory at the presidential election and worn him to seek divine wisdom before choosing people he would work with.

Mbaka, whose New Year Message entitled “From Goodluck to Badluck” elicited mixed reactions across the country, described Buhari’s emergence as a divine victory for Nigerians.

The priest, in a press briefing, through the spokesman of the ministry, Barr. Maximus Ike Ugwuoke, urged the President-Elect to devote attention in tackling the myriads of problems facing the country.

“It is with vindictive joy and glory to God that Adoration ministry, the nation and indeed the world saw the fulfillment of Fr Mbaka’s New Year prophesy of Change with the miraculous victorious emergence of General Muhammed Buhari at the March 28th polls as the President Elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We wish to restate that before President Goodluck became the President of this country, Fr Mbaka prophesied it in his message titled ‘Okolo’.

“Today again, Buhari’s victory among other lessons it portends to Nigerians has once more confirmed to all and sundry that Fr Mbaka is indeed a true Prophet of God and that His New Year message was indeed from the Oracle of the Holy Spirit as he declared.

“The ministry with magnanimous heart holds no grudges against anyone who attacked it in one way or the other at the rage of the controversies surrounding Fr Mbaka’s message and view their actions as being orchestrated by their misconstruing of Fr Mbaka’s prophetic calling.

“The Ministry joins other Nigerians to congratulate Muhammadu Buhari as God’s chosen instrument of Change to tackle the myriad problems facing Nigeria and pray God to endow him with the wisdom to go about this onerous task.

“We see Buhari’s victory as divine victory to all Nigerians irrespective of our religious and ethnic divide”, he stated.

The Cleric was, however, quick to advise Buhari to seek divine wisdom before choosing people he would work with.

“The prayer of Fr. Mbaka is that God will give Buhari the wisdom not to surround himself with wrong people, that was the major problem Jonathan’s administration faced.

“Fr. Mbaka has advocated that Nigerians should be patient with Buhari…

“However, if the patience of Nigerians is exhausted, if Buhari fails to deliver, Fr. Mbaka will be the first to cast the stone”, he stated.

Jonathan stops PDP’s bid to contest Buhari’s victory

President Goodluck Jonathan may have prevailed on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to challenge President-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in last Saturday’s election.

Instead of planning a case for the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, the Presidency will raise a Transition Committee on Tuesday.

Vice President-elect Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is likely to head the All Progressives Congress (APC) team which will join the committee ahead of the May 29 transition.

Ministers have started preparing their handover notes, it was also learnt.

It was gathered that although some PDP stalwarts wanted Buhari’s victory challenged at the tribunal, the President thought otherwise.

The party stalwarts, it was said, believe that some irregularities in some states are strong enough to upturn the final results of the election, which was hailed at home and abroad as substantially credible. Jonathan, it was learnt, said it made no sense —contesting Buhari’s victory— after he had conceded defeat.

It was learnt that the PDP leaders referred to the electoral scenario in Ekiti where the All Progressives Congress(APC) went to tribunal despite the acceptance of defeat by ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi.

The President, however, stood his ground that he would rather stand by his statesmanship attitude than going to tribunal.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The President has prevailed on PDP to drop plans to go to tribunal against Buhari. He said he wants his word to be his bond, having been applauded by the international community.

“At a point, Jonathan said ‘I don’t believe in post-election petition at tribunal because it distracts the incoming administration’.

“He also said Nigeria must emulate other nations where once the presidential poll is lost and won, the new government must not be distracted with election petitions.

“He told party leaders that he was not interested in going to the tribunal. It is now left for PDP leaders to heed his advice.

“So as at Thursday, the government’s position is that the PDP should not go to tribunal.”

Stating the PDP’s position on the elections in a statement yesterday, Chairman Adamu Mu’azu, said: “We have received reports of serious irregularities that characterized the conduct of the election and we shall channel our protests to the appropriate quarters in line with our profound respect for the rule of law and democratic ethos.”

He did not say whether the party would go to the tribunal but added: “What is paramount to us is the survival of our democracy, the unity, peace and progress of our dear nation and the happiness of all our people. Nigeria is bigger than any political party, individual or group and her overall interest must be our priority at all times.”

The President in 2010 at the 15th summit of the African Union (AU) in Kampala, Uganda described post-election litigation as a major distraction to governance.

Jonathan said: “It is inconvenient to already be in office and be thinking about election litigation.

“The essence of the immunity clause in the constitution is that if a president or a governor takes an oath of office, he should sit down and concentrate on the job and when he leaves office, he could be prosecuted for any offence.

“But because of the way we conduct our elections, the president who sits in office is still battling and being distracted with election issues, and it affects us.”

The transition committee is likely to be constituted next week.

Another source added: “The Presidency is working on a seamless transition from Jonathan’s administration to Buhari’s. The details are being worked out.”

“I think by next week, the picture of the transition committee will emerge. The government is working early on the transition because it involves a lot of work.

“The APC team will have to collaborate with the committee and ask questions if there are grey areas.”

Meanwhile, Ministers have started compiling their handover notes, which will be part of the integral aspect of the report of the transition committee.

Jonathan Condemns Killing Of Students

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday condemned attack of the Garissa University College in Kenya and target of innocent students by the Al- Shabab terrorists.

The President, in a statement signed by Presidential Spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kenya.

He also commiserated with the families of those who died today in the gruesome terrorist attack on the Garissa University College in Kenya.

President Jonathan who utterly condemned the deliberate targeting of innocent persons, schools and other soft targets by terrorists, said such atrocious, despicable and barbaric acts of violence ought to have no place in any civilized society.

“The President assures President Uhuru Kenyatta and the brotherly people of Kenya that Nigeria stands in full solidarity with them as they come to grips once again with the aftermath of another heinous terrorist attack on their country.”

Nigeria, President Jonathan affirms, will continue to work with Kenya, other African countries and the international community to rid the world of all terrorist groups.

The President believes that the attack on the Kenyan University and other similar atrocities across the world must strengthen and solidify the resolve of the global community to take more urgent and co-ordinated actions to speedily defeat the agents of global terror.

April 11: Jonathan, PDP Governors Meet

Ahead of the April 11th Governorship and State House of Assembly elections, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday met with Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party to strategize. The meeting which took place at the Presidential Villa, The Union gathered is aimed at ensuring that the party have better showing ahead of the forthcoming elections.

The President has since the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections were released embarked on confidence building aimed at restoring hope to protect the party from losing confidence since other elections are considered equally important. The Union gathered from a top PDP member that the President who had earlier met with some PDP top members is using the opportunity to restore confidence of members.

“Yes we have been meeting and reviewing events in the last few days. That we lost the Presidential election does not mean we should give up on the remaining elections. We must rebuild the confidence in our members so that they will not be disillusioned into giving up so easily.”

Our source says the party wants to put the immediate past behind and focus on its new role of providing strong opposition to ensure that the party makes it back to power in 2019. Among the Governors that made it to yesterday’s meeting at the Villa, include Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom state and Chairman, PDP Governors Forum.

The Union gathered last night that President Jonathan has charged the PDP Governors to ensure a better performance in the April 11 election if the party must continued to be relevant. The meeting was also attended by Governors Jonah Jang, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Plateau state governor, Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state, Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state, Liyel Imoke of Cross Rivers state, Ramalan Yero of Kaduna state, and Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta state. Also at the meeting were Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe state, Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Babangida Aliyu of Niger state. “The fight now is how to ensure that we not only regain all the PDP states, but also add more because we do not want to lose any state to the bandwagon effect”, The Union was told.

Ban Ki-Moon Thanks Jonathan

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- Moon has congratulated Presidentelect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections. Ban in a statement issued on Tuesday night in New York, said he had spoken to Jonathan and Buhari on the outcome of the polls as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Buhari was announced the winner by the electoral umpire, Prof. Attahiru Jega, ahead of incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan in a keenly contested March 28 election. Ban commended Jonathan for his leadership qualities throughout the electoral process and his statesmanship in upholding the democratic process. He also applauded the INEC for organising the elections in a professional and credible “manner under challenging circumstances”.

Be Magnanimous In Victory, Obasanjo Tells Buhari

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo advised the President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to demonstrate magnanimity over his victory in the Saturday’s presidential election. Obasanjo gave the advice in Abeokuta in his congratulatory message to Buhari. The former president noted that Nigeria’s political system was unnecessarily overheated by politicians. He observed that emphasis of the campaign was more on trivialities and was largely characterized by divisive, undignifying and disrespectful statements. Obasanjo therefore advised Buhari to be magnanimous by “binding the wounds and bitterness occasioned by the campaigns and the evil disciples”. Tambuwal Congratulates Jonathan, Buhari

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal has congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan and President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, over the successful conduct, and the outcome of the 2015 Presidential election. In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by his spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, Tambuwal described the election as a watershed in the history of Nigeria. He said the will of the majority of the people, as expressed in the results of the election, should be respected. Tambuwal said by conceding defeat, President Jonathan has written his name in gold and will be remembered for playing a critical role to douse tension in the aftermath of the election. While urging the President to ensure a smooth and successful transition, the Speaker equally tasked the Presidentelect to carry all Nigerians along in the new dispensation. “As I have always maintained, there is time for politics and time for governance. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has congratulated president-elect, retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on his victory at the March 28 presidential election. In a congratulatory message issued on Wednesday in Abuja, the NBA President, Mr Augustine Alegeh, wished Buhari a very successful and peaceful tenure. “We wish him God’s blessings and protection as he undertakes the onerous mandate of running the affairs of Nigeria for the next four years. “We trust that he will take steps to fulfill and actualise the promises which secured the mandate of Nigerians. Nigeria On Path Of Revival -ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday said that the outcome of the March 28 Presidential election showed that Nigeria was on the path to the much needed revival. Dr Nasir Fagge, National President of ASUU,who spoke with journalists in Lagos ,said that the entire electoral process and the resultant outcome was a sign of good things to come. ‘’Let me start by first congratulating the President-elect, Maj.-Gen. Buhari, for the victory. I think with this election this time around, our country is gradually finding its way toward revival. ‘’For the first time, our collective wish as a people has prevailed and of course, as you know, our elections had not always come out in a way that truly reflect the minds of Nigerians. ‘’With a new administration in place, it is my belief that issues surrounding insurgency, education, power and health will be given priority attention. ‘’We, therefore, expect that with attention being given to these areas, within the shortest possible time, our country will be placed firmly among comity of nations. ‘’I also want to give kudos to the electoral umpire, Prof. Attahiru Jega who has shown that he is truly an intellectual, irrespective of all odds,’’ he said.

CAN, Christian Elders Commend Jonathan, Congratulate Buhari

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) on Wednesday congratulated the President-Elect and presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) on his election. The two religious organizations in their separate congratulatory messages e-mailed to journalists in Abuja, also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for displaying quality Christian and democratic character and concession of defeat at the elections. The President of CAN and Founder of Warri-based Word of Life Bible Church, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, in his message to Buhari also saluted Nigerians for a peaceful election and called for “harmony between Christians and Muslims in their quest for a prosperous Nigeria.” While praying for a prosperous future for Nigeria, Oritsejafor also praised President Goodluck Jonathan for exhibiting good sportsmanship in conceding defeat to Buhari. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have congratulated Nigerians for their peaceful conduct during the just-concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections. The Senator said that in the last 16 years of practicing democracy, Nigerians had taken a giant leap. “We have conducted an election that is, by and large, free and fair and against all odds; it came and just went like that; indeed, it is a victory to Nigeria,” he said. Solomon said that in no particular order, Buhari, President Goodluck Jonathan and Prof. Attahiru Jega were heroes in the struggle. Also, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Joe Igbokwe, told NAN that the outcome of the presidential election was good news for Nigerians and for Lagos residents in particular.“We believe that for the first time in the history of this nation, Nigerians will be proud of the person they elected as President. “We know his history, we know his antecedents and we know what he is capable of doing,” Igbokwe said. He described Buhari as a man that could be trusted to run the affairs of the country. “You can achieve greater glory on the outside more than the inside sometimes. Also, the South-West Chapter of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) said the just concluded presidential election had ushered in a new era of the nation’s democracy. S’East congratulates Buhari

The people of South East geo political zone has congratulated General Muhammadu Buhari on his victory at last Saturday’s presidential election, even as they applauded Nigerians for making the right choice.

A press statement made available to newsmen by All Progressives Congress, APC, South East coordinator, APC Presidential Campaign Committee, Senator Chris Ngige, said the 2015 presidential election in Nigeria would certainly go down in the annals of the country’s political history, as one that showcased a sharp departure from the past.

Ngige said the fact that the most desired change has been realised by the massive support of Nigerians, who were desirous of change, voting Buhari as Presidentelect, has further strengthened the faith and belief of Nigerians in the country’s democratic process.

He said: “Against this back drop, we the people of the South East geo-political zone wish to applaud Nigerians and expressed our undiluted loyalty and support to success of the Buhari administration”.

Ngige further stated that the recent development has gone to vindicate the Igbos in APC before “our kin and kiths in the South East on the need for us not to put our eggs in one basket.”

Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation has said its candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, fought a good fight even as it insists that the campaign never abused anyone.

In its first official response since the declaration of All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, as winner of the poll, the campaign organisation reechoed the president’s show of sportsmanship when he congratulated the presidentelect by calling him on phone.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Director, Media and Publicity of the organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode, congratulated Buhari on his victory at the poll.

He asked Nigerians to support the incoming administration as well as support democratic process and agitate for a better Nigeria.

The organisation, he stressed, is very proud of the achievements of the president.

He said: “We ask them to co-operate with the in-coming government and to remember that we are first and foremost Nigerians before anything else.”

On whether PDP would seek legal redress, he declined comment, saying while he would not speak on behalf of the party, it has every right to go to court if it deems it fit.

“Having lost, it does not mean that is the end to the world, it just means we need to re-group, re-organise ourselves and begin the process all over again, because another election will come in a few years time. And that is where we are today. We have conceded that we have lost. We acknowledge the fact that we fought a good fight.

“We do not have any fears about the future. We did the right thing during the campaign. We have no regrets about our candidate or the way in which we conducted our campaign and we will live to fight another day.

“I had nothing personal against anybody. I was simply doing my job for which I have no regrets and I wish them well, and I sincerely hope they will take Nigeria to a level that we can all be proud of,” he said.
